Correlations of Socionic Indicators With the Scales of the Cattell Questionnaire

Viktor L. Talanov · June 2023 · source: https://vk.ru/wall-168821911_111978

This study was conducted using our questionnaire form 104, with 343 respondents. The version of the Cattell questionnaire used was its IPIP version, equivalent to the main version but “free” of licensing restrictions.

The Cattell questionnaire is important because it was on the basis of this oldest personality questionnaire that all of modern psychology of individual differences (differential psychology of personality) both arose and developed for a long time. The first factor-analytic studies of personality traits that led to the emergence of the “BIG FIVE” personality factor model were also conducted on the basis of empirical data obtained using this questionnaire.

Therefore, broadly speaking, only what was once reflected in this old questionnaire subsequently entered modern personality typologies. And everything, all those personality traits that for one reason or another fell outside Cattell’s consideration, subsequently also fell outside modern personality models.

The results of our comparison of the Cattell scales with socionics are presented in the six attached tables. Table 6 also uses data from our study using questionnaire form 105 on correlations of socionic indicators with the Beck questionnaire for PERSONALITY DISORDERS (see vk.com/wall-168821911_111635 )

CONCLUSIONS:

By their association with the subscales of the Cattell questionnaire (see Table 6), the socionic traits are arranged in the same rank order in which the corresponding Big Five factors are also arranged by their weight, in descending order.

This is not surprising – the Big Five personality factors were originally obtained by factorizing the 16 indicators of the Cattell questionnaire.

It is noteworthy that the next two socionic traits by the weight of their association with the Cattell scales, QUESTIMITY and DEMOCRACY, although not taken into account in the Big Five, are instead taken into account in another, already six-seven-factor personality model, HEXACO. In fact, HEXACO has not six but seven personality factors. However, the last two, the sixth and seventh, turn out to be closely correlated and, in terms of their substantive content, describe almost exactly what the socionic traits QUESTIMITY and DEMOCRACY also describe (between which a difficult-to-eliminate positive correlation is also observed).

The eighth most important socionic factor (judging by its association with the Cattell subscales) is the socionic CONSTRUCTIVISM. Note that in its association with personality disorders it even surpasses intuition. However, this factor is ignored in the currently widespread personality models, which have at most seven factors.

Finally, socionic traits with their own substantive content, such as PROCESS, POSITIVISM, CARELESSNESS, and STATICS, also cannot be neglected – their associations both with the Cattell questionnaire and with the Beck questionnaire for personality disorders are sufficiently substantial and quite reliable.

The weakest traits are TACTICS and YIELDING (they are also the weakest in socionics, even CARELESSNESS is stronger).

But the socionic trait MERRINESS turns out to be absolutely undeservedly underestimated (both in the Cattell questionnaire and in the Beck questionnaire for PD).

MERRINESS clearly divides empathy into cognitive and affective Also, the trait “MERRINESS” clearly separates two varieties of Logic from one another – the logic of simple choice decisions, with comparison of the effectiveness of several alternatives, and the logic of constructing fixed structures and systems. These two forms of logic have brain mechanisms that are largely non-overlapping. Evidently, the entire important substantive sphere of life and the psyche associated with the merriness factor was simply not noticed by Cattell at the time, and subsequently, for the most part, also fell outside the consideration of academic psychology of individual differences.

AND IN VAIN!

If factor personality models disregard the genuinely weak traits TACTICS and YIELDING, then the 13-factor personality model will be the most optimal for use. It has been implemented by us in scientific socionics (even with its expansion to a 15-factor model), evidently, the next task - its broad recognition in world psychology.
