Common Psychological Properties and Values in Dual Pairs of Psychotypes.

Psychotypes of the Alpha and Beta Quadras.

Any real psychological property projects not onto a single socionic trait but, most often, simultaneously onto several traits; therefore, “pure” manifestations of the pole of, say, rationality/irrationality are almost never encountered in practice. Manifestations of irrationality-rationality may make a determining contribution to the content of a particular psychological property, but the poles of a number of other socionic traits will nevertheless also be present and have an effect on its coloration – for example, “Decisiveness,” “Yieldingness,” “Statics,” and so forth. If socionic traits that are invariant for duals participate in several leading roles in the formation of a psychological property, then such a composite property will also be invariant, that is, common to both types of that particular dual pair.

Dual psychotypes have the same pole signs for seven of the fifteen socionic traits - duals have the same rationality/irrationality polarity, the polarities of the three quadral traits (Judicious-Decisive, Democratic-Aristocratic, Merry-Serious), as well as those of the “Process-Result,” “Yielding-Obstinate,” and “Carefree-Farsighted” traits. If some psychological properties and values have one, two, or several of the listed socionic traits as their leading components, then such properties behave in the same way for both members of the dual pair and prove to be shared by the dual psychotypes.

The other eight socionic traits have opposite polarities in duals; therefore, these eight traits cannot participate in the formation of psychological properties and values shared by dual pairs, and their presence in a property, even if slight, will blur and reduce its dual commonality.

The principal ideological values are associated almost exclusively with only the three quadral traits [1], and their polarities are the same in duals; therefore, the ideological attitudes of members of a dual pair are, as a rule, identical or very close. The same applies to any other psychological properties if their largest projections are found along the rationality/irrationality axis and the axes of the three quadral traits, as well as the Yielding-Obstinate, Carefree-Farsighted, and Process-Result axes. A contribution from any of the other eight socionic traits to a psychological property will, by contrast, impede commonality in the manifestation of that property among duals.

The fact that most “ideological values,” as experience shows, are associated with quadral traits and therefore manifest identically or very similarly in both members of a dual pair may have an evolutionary basis. At the lower level, primate populations are divided into small family groups, which in turn unite into larger communities. Accordingly, with a certain degree of conventionality, one can distinguish the sphere of the “domestic policy” of small family groups and the sphere of their “foreign-policy” interests and actions in relation to the population as a whole. In the intrafamily, domestic-policy sphere, expediency dictates the benefit of dividing behavioral functions, the benefit of diversification and dissimilarity. In the foreign-policy sphere, by contrast, which is directed toward other family groups and the population as a whole, unity of values and motives is advantageous, ultimately ensuring coordinated actions by the male and female in relation to their neighbors.

The tables below present the results of a detailed experimental study of the psychophysiological and psychological properties and values shared by dual pairs. The study analyzed responses to psychological questionnaire questions (more than 3000 questionnaire items in total) given by more than two thousand respondents whose socionic psychotypes had been determined in advance. Psychotypes were determined by means of questionnaires, using correlations between respondents’ answers and the “reference” (averaged) answers to the same questions given by “average representatives” of all 16 sociotypes. Thus, to determine the type of a particular person, 16 empirically obtained correlations were compared with one another. The maximum correlation indicated the diagnosis of the leading psychotype (sociotype). As calculations showed, the reliability of determining respondents’ leading type by this procedure in our study averaged no less than 93% correct diagnoses. The “reference answers” of the types (the basis of diagnosis) are understood as the averaged answers of respondents in the training sample who declared their type on the basis of repeated external typing (predominantly by experts from professional socionic schools in Moscow and Kyiv). Thus, within each type in the training sample, the answers of respondents typed by different experts, whose views on the boundaries between types partly diverged, were averaged. This made it possible to reflect an averaged view of the boundaries between types for the general “socionic culture” of Russia and Ukraine. Additional correction of the types’ reference answers, increasing the accuracy and reliability of the diagnostic coefficients, was introduced using two special mathematical procedures: first, stepwise recurrent refinement of respondents’ diagnoses, and second, symmetrization of the training-sample data array (the procedure is based on the fact that the reference answer of any type to a given question can be predicted with high accuracy – by means of decomposition by Reinin traits - on the basis of the reference answers given to that question by the other 15 types).

To identify psychological manifestations shared by dual pairs, questionnaire items were first identified for which the two sociotypes of the corresponding dual pair, averaged over the sample, deviated in the same direction relative to the conditional population mean (for a definition of this term, see the next paragraph). Then, for each preliminarily selected questionnaire item and for the two psychotypes of the dual pair, the geometric mean of the deviations of the mean values of these types from the conditional population mean was calculated. If the absolute magnitude of the resulting geometric mean exceeded 0,27, the corresponding questionnaire item was included in the list for final semantic clustering. Clustering was performed “manually” (according to the semantic content of questionnaire items that passed the test for dual commonality); the clustering results were checked by the similarity of the projection profiles of items within a single cluster across all 16 types and 15 Reinin traits.

In all subsequent tables, the zero reference level of a property is taken to be its mean value in a conditional model population consisting of equal numbers of representatives of each of the 16 sociotypes (the so-called “conditional population mean”). Thus, all values presented in the tables characterize deviations from this conditional population mean (plus – upward, minus – downward). The unit of measurement is a universal quantity equal to the standard deviation (“half-spread”) of the magnitude of the property in the population. For example, (-0,5) means a downward deviation, by half a standard deviation from the conditional population mean, of the magnitude of the property (or the frequency of its occurrence) measured and averaged in a subsample of a particular sociotype, club, quadra, or trait pole.

Mean values of a property designated as a cluster and represented by several questionnaire questions-items are obtained by averaging the values of the individual items included in the cluster, taking into account their individual weight in the cluster. Corrections have been introduced into the final values characterizing the cluster as a whole to mathematically correct the partial leveling (smoothing, attenuation of the property) that occurs when several questionnaire items that are not 100% correlated with one another are averaged. This leveling, which is inevitable in intermediate calculations, is thus corrected and compensated for in the final tables. This compensation means that, in the tables presented, the number of primary questionnaire items from which the cluster of a property is composed has no effect on the variance of the property (its spread across the 16 sociotypes).

All property values specified for trait poles, clubs, and quadras are derived from the primary, empirically obtained values for psychotypes. For example, the value for the 1st quadra is calculated as the mean of the values of the four psychotypes belonging to that quadra; the same calculation method is applied to trait poles. Thus, the actual heterogeneity of respondent samples (that is, variation in the percentage of types, clubs, and quadras represented in a particular sample) has no effect on the results presented in the tables, including the mean values of trait poles.

Brief Discussion of the Results:

First, the tables show that the same socionic trait (for example, rationality/irrationality) manifests itself substantially differently in different dual pairs – this can be explained by its additional coloration by the poles of other traits, which may differ in sign between different dual pairs even when those pairs have the same rationality/irrationality polarity.

Second, it is noteworthy that properties of an “ideological” orientation in most cases characterize both types of a dual pair in the same way. For example, it is no coincidence that among the most prominent representatives of the right and far right, to the point that both their ideological rhetoric and practical politics become indistinguishable, are simultaneously the LSI psychotype (Nicholas I, Arakcheev, Stalin, Gamsakhurdia, Băsescu, Jörg Haider, Sarah Palin, Ahmadinejad) and the EIE psychotype (Ivan the Terrible, Paul I, Hitler, Mao, Mugabe, Berlusconi, Zhirinovsky). In both the LSI and EIE cases, the direction taken by the regimes they lead most often proves indistinguishably identical: dictatorship, suppression of science and the intelligentsia, chauvinism, hatred, and unlimited expansion of the powers of the secret police.

Third, on the basis of the property clusters obtained for dual pairs, conclusions can be drawn about the activation of certain subcortical and cortical centers in the corresponding dual pairs. Thus, the clusters of the LSI-EIE pair clearly indicate increased activation of the amygdaloid nuclei and the left insular region, with this increase being greatest specifically in this pair of sociotypes. A consequence of this increased activation in LSI and EIE is their increased paranoid disposition (distrust, long-lasting resentment, negative attitudes toward people), as well as increased irritability, egocentrism, greed, and xenophobia, and a painful sensitivity even to thoughts of any possible losses and deprivations. At the same time, the amygdala is primarily responsible for long-lasting resentment, egocentrism, distrust, and aggression, whereas the insular cortex is responsible for intolerance of loss and an unfriendly attitude toward outsiders – although the functions of these structures partly overlap.

It should be emphasized that, from the standpoint of neurophysiology and neuropsychology, the identification of such theoretical loci as psychotypes and poles of socionic traits is, to a certain extent, a fiction. The point is that, for example, the same amygdala proves to be associated not with one socionic trait but with several, and likewise not with one socionic type but with several. It may follow from this that neurophysiology offers a different basis of building-block elements for explaining psychological differences and reducing them to that basis than does differential psychology.

From our point of view, the tables presented may be highly useful both for analyzing and understanding shared dual values and for identifying their psychological and physiological mechanisms. A substantial part of the results is not unexpected and has previously been discussed by us, for example, in work [1]. However, one novel finding, for example, was the very weak attraction of the IEI type to thoughts about the future and its rather weak ability to forecast the future (EIE undoubtedly surpasses the “Lyricist” in these abilities). Apparently, the prognostic capabilities of the “Lyricist” are greatly exaggerated by socionic mythology.
