Abstract

In socionics, that is, a branch of neo-Jungian personality typology widespread in Russia and Ukraine, the temperamental level of human personality is classified on the basis of the hierarchy of eight basic psychic functions inherent in each person. Among these functions are two sensing functions – so-called “black” sensing (also “extraverted,” “static,” “force sensing,” or simply “Se”) and so-called “white” sensing (also “introverted,” “dynamic,” “sensing of sensations,” or simply “Si”). On the basis of the hierarchy of the 8 functions of the psyche, socionics distinguishes 16 psychological types, each of which possesses a set of psychological characteristics that is predominantly specific to it. The reverse approach is also possible, in which people are first classified into types on the basis of marker properties of the types (that is, into 16 conventionally distinguished sectors in a multidimensional psychological property space, with each person assigned to the one of the 16 sectors closest to them), after which, on the basis of this partition, the properties of the 8 psychic functions are studied. Using this latter approach, the author obtained reliable functional profiles characterizing 6663 questionnaire items, including both items used in socionics for psychotype diagnosis and “ballast” items. The resulting material made it possible to analyze the semantic clusters formed by questionnaire statements most closely associated with each of the 8 socionic functions of the psyche. The present work presents in detail the results of this analysis for extraverted sensing. It is shown that the so-called socially negative properties of extraverted sensing (aggression, egocentrism, a tendency toward sadism and profiteering, criminal tendencies, etc.), whose immanent inclusion among Se markers and, more broadly, among markers of the innate temperamental level is often disputed by socionists and psychologists, are indeed immanent properties of Se. Moreover, it is shown that the core of the numerous manifestations of socionic extraverted sensing consists precisely of those characteristics most closely associated with territorial aggression. These results are additionally confirmed by an independent correlational and analysis-of-variance study conducted outside socionic diagnosis, without using it at all. Analysis of variance also showed that environmental factors influencing the formation of the conditionally socially negative properties of extraverted sensing (upbringing, profession, etc.) are minimal: they account for a share of the variance in the magnitude of these properties five times smaller than the share associated with innate (although not necessarily hereditary) temperamental factors described by a person’s socionic profile. Finally, the article briefly discusses hypotheses concerning the physiological basis of Se, offers comments on the psychological support of contemporary neuroimaging and neurogenetic research, and analyzes the evolutionary origins of extraverted sensing as an independent function of the psyche and its relationships with society and power in different historical periods.

Method

For the purposes of the present study, the semantic clusters of extraverted sensing were analyzed by the author using 6663 initial questionnaire items with known socionic type, trait, and functional profiles (validated on samples ranging from 300 to 7000 people). The clusters were then assembled manually from approximately 2350 selected items with an experimentally identified extreme loading on Se relative to the other socionic functions. Items were grouped into clusters according to semantic similarity of their wording, while controlling that the type profile of the item under consideration correlated preferentially with the profiles of other items in that particular cluster. The resulting 122 semantic clusters of extraverted sensing were subsequently divided, with the aid of EXCEL, into 15 groups (superclusters), this time solely on the basis of similarity between their socionic profiles.

The initial type profiles of the 6663 items were obtained using several self-learning sociodiagnostic questionnaires. Each type profile consists of 16 numbers, one for each of the 16 socionic psychotypes. Each number is equal to the deviation from the population mean (in units of the standard deviation of the population) shown by representatives of the corresponding psychotype in the degree to which they agree with the given questionnaire statement. As a rule, several questionnaires in which the given item was tested are used to calculate each number. The final number is then the weighted mean of the results from all questionnaires, taking into account the number of representatives of the given type among their respondents. The 16 numbers constituting the type profile of a questionnaire item can be regarded as diagnostic coefficients for subsequently calculating the type profiles of new respondents answering this and other items in a subsequent questionnaire. A respondent’s complete type profile is formed from 16 linear correlation coefficients calculated between the vector of the respondent’s answers to all questionnaire items (after normalization) and 16 vectors of diagnostic coefficients, one for each of the 16 types, taken from the known type profiles of the corresponding questionnaire items.

At the beginning of the author’s work with sociodiagnostic questionnaires, namely several years ago at the start of the research program, the initial diagnostic coefficients of the questionnaires were obtained entirely, as a first approximation, from the sociotypes (one of the 16 possible types) declared in advance by the participants in the testing, also taking into account their declared probability and their declared socionics experience. On the basis of the coefficients obtained, first-stage type diagnosis was performed independently of the declared types, allowing the types of all respondents to be determined, both those who had declared their types in advance and those who had not. At this stage, declared psychotypes that differed grossly from the newly diagnosed ones were rejected, and the training procedure for obtaining diagnostic coefficients from the responses of respondents with previously declared psychotypes was repeated. Diagnosis was then performed again using the refined system of coefficients. The results of this diagnosis, now for all respondents in the sample, were again used to obtain a system of diagnostic coefficients for diagnosing each of the 16 psychotypes, but this was now done without regard to the declared types.

The diagnostic coefficients obtained were used in subsequent questionnaires containing the same items. Material accumulated from new questionnaires was used to refine the previously obtained system of diagnostic coefficients. At the final stage, when all material from all questionnaires had already been collected, an additional procedure for symmetrizing the diagnostic coefficients was performed. The point is that the system of diagnostic coefficients and the corresponding socionic type profiles of all respondents obtained with its aid deviate quite strongly from symmetry. This means that socionic traits that are supposed to be orthogonal (that is, to correlate with one another at a zero correlation coefficient) are in fact far from orthogonal in the full respondent dataset – even after correcting (balancing) the sample, by means of a special mathematical-statistical procedure, for inequality in the representation of the types within it. This departure from orthogonality, which reveals socionic asymmetry, affects both the basic (Jungian) traits and, to an even greater extent, the so-called 11 “weak” Reinin traits. For example, intuition is empirically found to correlate strongly with ethics and irrationality. Some of these “parasitic” correlations are justified and genuine because they have an understandable physiological basis, but some are indeed parasitic because they are caused by distortions in the psychotypes initially declared by respondents (for example, people prefer some psychotypes over others, and people’s self-identification by psychotype is also influenced by certain false but widespread socionic myths).

All these causes, reflecting both genuine physiologically determined asymmetry of socionic parameters and mere artifacts of human mentality, together produce distortions in socionic traits and cause their departure from mutual orthogonality. If this nonorthogonality is completely eliminated artificially in the system of diagnostic coefficients, the mean percentage of agreement between diagnosed and declared types falls from approximately 62% to 50%. However, the new subsequent systems of diagnostic coefficients obtained after this (on the basis of the types newly diagnosed with their aid) again gradually produce nonorthogonality of the traits. This should already be regarded as genuine asymmetry of socionic parameters, which repeatedly restores itself.

Using recurrent procedures and weighted criteria for optimal symmetrization (on the one hand maximizing the proportion of agreement between diagnosed and declared types, and on the other minimizing mutual correlations among the 15 socionic traits), the author succeeded in arriving at a system of diagnostic coefficients that, first, is stable under subsequent recurrent “self-learning” procedures applied to this system; second, provides minimal correlations among socionic traits; and third, despite all this, provides a proportion of agreement between the resulting type diagnoses and the types declared by respondents no worse than 58–59%. Thus, there are grounds to believe that this final system of diagnostic coefficients and the respondent type profiles obtained with its aid in any questionnaires best reflect the true structure of the distribution and interrelationships of socionic parameters in the population. For the purposes of the present work, the socionic profiles of questionnaire items obtained using precisely this system of diagnostic coefficients were used (it should immediately be noted, however, that using the “uncorrected” system of diagnostic coefficients, based only on respondents’ declared types, leads to exactly the same conclusions regarding the Se clusters).

Semantic Clusters of Extraverted Sensing and Their Socionic Profiles

Here we provide only the list of clusters together with their socionic profiles. The type profile of each cluster is the result of averaging the type profiles of all items included in the cluster (taking into account, of course, the response version counted for the item: “yes” or “no”; for a “no” version, the profile added to the sum is multiplied by minus one). The standard deviation of the final cluster type profile is selected so that it equals the mean of the standard deviations of the type profiles of all items included in the cluster. The trait and functional profiles of a cluster are obtained from its type profile purely mathematically using the known procedures (described below in the presentation of Parts 2 and 3 of Table 1).

Each type profile is the result of averaging the type profiles of all items included in the cluster. In turn, for each individual questionnaire item in the cluster, the coefficients of its type profile show how far, on average, the property encoded in the item deviates from the population mean (in units of the standard deviation of the population) for representatives of each particular TIM among all 16. Type profiles form the basis for deriving all subsequent socionic profiles from them - including trait and functional profiles (see Table 1, Parts 2, 3, and 4)

When considering Table 1, Part 4, a question may arise: why do some extraverted sensing clusters statistically gravitate toward quadras for which Se is not a valued function? The point is that Se (not necessarily valued) is present in every TIM. For example, ESE and LSE have fairly strong Se, although their Se (in the strong “demonstrative” position) is not valued. Cluster no. 116 (thunderousness of the voice, loud laughter, guffawing), for example, predictably has its highest values for SLE and SEE, but it is also high for ESE and LSE (including not only because of Se, but also because of contributions to this cluster from Fe and Te, in addition to the principal contribution from Se). At the same time, introverts of the Se-valuing quadras have very low values for this cluster. Because of their low values, the quadra-mean values of this cluster for the second and third quadras are lower than the mean for Quadra 1.

A similar question may arise, for example, with respect to cluster no. 98 (predominance of consumer values): why does it gravitate mainly toward the third quadra, although the LIE sociotype from this quadra unquestionably does not share consumer values? The reason is that SEE makes the greatest contribution to Se in this quadra. Since SEE is also the “chief consumer” of the socion, it is precisely because of SEE’s contribution that, when the cluster values are averaged across all four types of the third quadra, this quadra takes the leading position among the socion’s quadras. Therefore, the table of quadra tendencies should not be absolutized – the tendencies shown in it are merely the result of averaging the contributions of four different types, and these tendencies do not necessarily extend to every type in the quadra under consideration. For information on a cluster’s association with each particular sociotype, one should consult not this table but Table 1, Part 1 directly, where the type profiles of the clusters are presented.

Characteristics of the 15 Generalized Cluster Groups

Group no. 1 – combines 14 primary clusters, 13 of which are directly related to territorial aggression. This group has the highest indicator of exclusive association with Se. Among the finer nuances of its averaged functional profile are a slight elevation of Ni (which overall maximizes socionically decisive traits) and a lowering of Fi and Ne, that is, functions that support altruistic behavior. Among the psychotypes, the highest scores for this cluster group are found in SLE, SEE, LSI, and ILI (in precisely that order), while the lowest are found in EII and LII (with a substantial gap from the other types). It cannot be excluded that, among all the cerebral factors of Se, an elevated testosterone level and the specific characteristics of hypothalamic NMDA receptors, as well as a specifically localized reduction in serotonergic activity, play an enhanced role in forming the group’s specific profile.

Group no. 2 – combines 8 primary clusters and has a functional profile similar to that of Group no. 1. Semantically, it mainly combines clusters associated with the proprietary instinct and with a rigid division of surrounding objects (things, people, ideas, territories) into strictly “one’s own” and strictly “alien,” with everything one’s own declared good and infallible and everything alien declared erroneous and bad, deserving fault-finding and contempt. At the functional level, the group is accompanied by a pronounced reduction in the strength of the intuitive functions. It cannot be excluded that vasopressin receptors in the brain play an enhanced role, among all cerebral factors of Se, in forming the group’s specific profile. Among the psychotypes, the highest scores for this group of Se properties are found in SEE, LSI, SLE, and ESI, while the lowest are found in LII, EII, ILE, ILI, and IEE.

Group no. 3 – combines 14 primary clusters in which there is a large simultaneous contribution from decisive and extraverted traits, hence the semantic content of the group: lust for power, pugnacity, conflict-proneness, irascibility, speed of action, decisiveness (in its everyday meaning), radicalism, demandingness, striving for situations that challenge self-assertion, etc. The group’s type profile sharply separates its leaders (SLE and SEE) from its outsiders (EII and LII). Incidentally, lust for power within Se (cluster no. 30, in which three types already lead: SLE, SEE, and LSI) is a very powerful force that often dominates even its possessor. This is, of course, an old and extreme example, but Nysa of Cappadocia had five of her sons killed so that they would never deprive her of the throne.

Group no. 4 – combines 9 rather heterogeneous primary clusters, including low pain sensitivity, preference for a high-protein meat diet, preference for strong alcohol over low-alcohol drinks, accelerated energy metabolism in the form of elevated body temperature (which may in turn explain both meat consumption and the preference for strong alcohol), but also a particularly marked reduction in empathy and an especially consumerist attitude toward people, reduced frequency of urination (which may indicate increased vasopressinergic activity), and rarity of nausea reactions (which may, in principle, indicate reduced mean levels of free dopamine). At the functional level, the group is associated with a substantial increase in logical traits (alongside the dominant role of Se). Among the psychotypes, SLE, LSI, and SEE lead on this group, while EIE and EII have the lowest scores.

Group no. 5 – combines 11 clusters, at least half of which tend in content toward signs of increased cholinergic activity (good eye lubrication, large distributed-attention capacity, rapid muscular mobilization, high reaction speed, etc.). At the functional level, in this group the dominance of Se is accompanied by a very sharp reduction in Ni, a moderate reduction in Ne and Fi, and a moderate elevation of Si.

Group no. 6 – consists of 9 clusters with similar meanings (fearlessness, “thick-skinnedness,” lack of touchiness, low anxiety, self-confidence, stress resistance, rapid repression, etc.). At the functional level, all these features appear as an additional high Te peak accompanying the dominant Se peak, together with a large Fi deficit. It cannot be excluded that moderately elevated serotonergic activity may play an enhanced role in forming the specific characteristics of this profile (against the background of the other cerebral features that form Se as such).

Group no. 7 – consists of 16 primary clusters united by a very substantial increase in Si in addition to the leading role of Se, as well as a very strong deficit of both intuitive functions (both Ni and Ne). Semantically, these are clusters characterizing weak imagination and abstract thinking, underdevelopment of internal verbal thought, inability to think about the future and, more generally, to mentally model imagined situations, and a tendency toward external visual concreteness; in a positive sense, they characterize motor dexterity and excellent movement coordination, large short-term (working) memory capacity, visual observance, and detailed accuracy of visual memory and visual perception, among other properties. All sensing psychotypes have similarly high scores for this group, while all intuitive types have low scores. One may hypothesize genetic characteristics of a number of dopamine receptors, including those in the thalamus and striatum, which, among other possible causes, determine individual differences in this group of properties (a number of published studies indicate, for example, that both extraverted and introverted sensing types have greater biochemical availability of D2-type dopamine receptors in the thalamus than intuitive types). A role for selectively elevated serotonergic activity also cannot be excluded.

Group no. 8 – consists of six clusters that appear semantically heterogeneous at first glance, but whose core tends toward characteristics of the skin and body build: a stocky build, elevated content of the melanin pigment in the skin and retina (“dark complexion”), rapid wound healing, and the uncharacteristic occurrence of skin inflammation. Also included are consumer-oriented life attitudes, which semantically tend rather toward the preceding Group no. 7. The group’s functional profile as a whole is also close to that of the preceding Group no. 7 (simultaneous elevation of Se and Si with simultaneous reduction of Ne and Ni). SLE and SEE lead in this group, while the lowest scores are observed in LII and EIE.

Group no. 9 consists of a single primary cluster and coincides with it: liking for spicy foods. It should be noted that published research indicates that liking for the bitter taste of foods correlates with increased aggressiveness, which independently and indirectly also confirms the association we found between preference for spicy foods (hot, peppery foods) and Se. At the functional level, this cluster is characterized by an additional decline in Fe and Si accompanying the Se peak (the latter may indicate a reduction in serotonergic activity, which presumably also accompanies the territorial-aggression cluster).

Group no. 10 – consists of 5 clusters, three of which are related to sex (high libido and stronger sweat odor) and, more generally, to the high strength of primal desires and motivations. In addition to high Se, the group’s functional profile is characterized by a substantial reduction in Ti and Ni together with a sharp increase in Fe. SLE, SEE, and ESE lead on this group; LII and ILI are the outsiders. The group’s association with increased activity of the right-hemisphere limbic sphere appears fairly obvious (although the causes of this may, generally speaking, differ).

Group no. 11 – consists of 7 clusters, including difficulty in analysis with rapid identification of the main, general, and whole (attention scatters across details), low curiosity, heightened sensitivity to odors, and Machiavellianism. All these clusters are united by a sharp decline in Ne and both logical functions, in addition to the Se peak, together with a substantial increase in both ethical functions. SEE is the leader of the group, separated from the other psychotypes; ESI and SEI also have elevated peaks, whereas LII and ILE are strongly lowered.

Group no. 12 – consists of 10 clusters associated with dominance of Se against a background of elevated irrationality and moderate ethical predominance, with fairly strongly suppressed Ti. These include unfaithfulness, unreliability, impulsivity, boastfulness, indiscipline, carelessness with disregard for norms, rules, and laws, etc. All extraverted irrational types have high values for the group, but SEE and SLE lead. All introverted rational types have negative scores.

Group no. 13 – consists of 3 clusters (apparently physiologically related), whose obvious core is a dislike of dietary sugar and carbohydrates (as indicated above for Group no. 4, Se prefers a high-protein diet instead). Avoidance of dietary sugars leads both to healthier teeth and, one may suppose, to greater resistance to the onset of drowsiness under monotony (it is possible that this also extends more generally to greater resistance to any daytime sleepiness, especially after eating). The leaders of the group are the Beta sensing types, SLE and LSI.

Group no. 14 – consists of 8 clusters whose core is an overall substantial increase in extraverted traits and all extraverted functions in the functional profile (especially Fe, following Se).

Group no. 15 – consists of the single cluster characterizing the absence of disorientation regarding the date and day of the week. It is the only one of all the groups accompanied by a substantial increase in rational traits (in the functional profile, all rational functions are elevated in addition to the dominant Se peak).

Unity of the Extraverted Sensing Factor – Evidence from Direct Measurements and Analysis of Variance

After the preceding section’s analysis of the 122 primary Se clusters and their 15 generalized groups, a false suspicion may arise that one form of Se differs fundamentally from another and that no unitary Se factor exists. In this section we will show that this assumption is erroneous and that the most diverse manifestations of Se, including both conventionally “positive” and conventionally “negative” ones, are closely correlated aspects of an unquestionably unitary functional core. Like all other socionic functions, Se has a polygenic genetic nature, but the independent influences of different genes on it are cemented into a whole by the fact that they affect one or another evolutionarily established brain structure that is functionally unitary and physiologically supports one or another unitary psychic function. Genetic manifestations can facilitate or impede the operation of the corresponding structures at different levels, thereby affecting the functional profile of personality, but the various manifestations of one and the same cerebral functional structure, realized at the physiological or psychological level, do not thereby lose their close mutual correlation. Thus, the magnitude of Se can be influenced separately by different genes separately affecting dopamine, serotonin, cholinergic, vasopressin, androgen-hormonal, glutamate, and NMDA receptors, but despite such genetic heterogeneity, the resulting manifestations of Se prove very similar in all cases. The small variations that color manifestations of Se differently are not caused by Se itself as such, but by the appearance of additional variations in the other seven psychic functions of the profile (as we saw in the examples involving the 15 enlarged cluster groups), because different genetic variations affect not only Se but other psychic functions as well, thereby specifically and additionally coloring behavior.

Doubts about the unity of the extraverted sensing factor are most often expressed not by specialists but by individual amateurs on socionics forums, predominantly Beta ethical types, for understandable reasons (whose roots should be sought in the desire to present their quadra and their sensing duals in a more socially favorable light), and primarily concern the relationship between the so-called negative and positive aspects of extraverted sensing. The remoteness of these motives from science does not, however, reduce the need to examine this issue in detail, argumentatively, and conclusively - so that from now on the factorial unity of all manifestations of extraverted sensing collected above in Table 1 rests not on the authority of Gulenko, Ermak, and Talanov but on firm scientific evidence. This is what the author will do. In this section I will clearly show that high stress resistance, rapid decision-making, reaction speed, high attention and short-term memory capacity, accuracy and detail of sensory perception, olfactory sensitivity, self-confidence, leadership, competitiveness, psychological invulnerability, and excellent motor development – on the one hand, and on the other - egocentrism, aggressiveness, maliciousness, sadism, domestic violence, boorishness, the need for cheap ostentatious display, disrespect for another person’s individuality, readiness for deception, lies, and slander, self-interest, cynicism in using people, ethnocentrism, chauvinism, patriotism in the style of “Germany above all” or “Russia above all,” militarism, thirst for others’ fear, rejection of others’ freedom, searching for enemies, hostility toward other people, rival sports teams, and other countries, a tendency toward fraud and acquisitive crimes, predisposition to crimes against the person, heightened sexual instinct, etc. – are all different but fully equivalent and very closely intertwined and correlated manifestations of one and the same integral psychophysiological factor called extraverted or force sensing in socionics.

Below we will also attempt to show that, from an evolutionary perspective, all these diverse manifestations are adaptive in character, having formed around the needs of the sexual instinct and the territorial aggression linked to it.

To begin, we will use the results of 958 non-duplicate respondents to the SZ sociodiagnostic questionnaire (it is convenient because of the large number of respondents who completed it and the good representation within it of items from different sensing clusters, both extraverted and introverted) and form two experimental blocks from those items in this questionnaire that have the maximum loading on Se among all functions (see Table 4, Parts 1 and 2). The first block includes Se items with a negative social “taint,” characterizing it unfavorably (tendency toward violence, deceitfulness, mockery, sadism, arrogance, criminal inclinations, Hobbesianism, disregard for others’ rights and freedoms, etc.). The second block includes items that are positive or neutral with respect to social norms (decisiveness, stress resistance, leadership, high libido, motor dexterity, accuracy of sensory perception, etc.).

The linear correlation coefficient between the type profiles of Blocks 1 and 2 (composed respectively of “bad” and “good” items) is 0,777. The linear correlation coefficient between their functional profiles is 0,750. The downward deviation of the correlation coefficient from unity is caused by the fact that the socionic profiles of the two blocks are nevertheless not entirely equivalent. For example, in the profile of the block composed of “bad” items, in addition to the dominant Se peak, Si is substantially reduced (a function characterized by conformism and conciliatoriness), while Ni is additionally strengthened (following Se, also partly an “evil” function because of dissatisfaction with life); in the profile of the block composed of “good” items, by contrast, Si is strengthened and Ni is reduced. Nevertheless, the decisive role in the profiles of both blocks is played by the high Se peak, and it is precisely because of this that the high correlation of 0,750 is achieved.

The linear correlation coefficient between the type profiles of Blocks 3 and 4 (homogeneous item blocks equivalent to one another) is 0,982, that is, practically unity. Thus, we accomplished the task of making these blocks homogeneous: although they are composed of different items, they are almost indistinguishable in their resulting socionic profile. The linear correlation coefficient between their functional profiles is likewise 0,982.

If one proceeds only from the socionic profiles presented above, they already make it evident that the “bad” Se properties from item Block 1 are highly and positively correlated with its “good” properties from item Block 2. However, such an argument is certainly insufficient for us. Some biased and distrustful people might suppose that, when the socionic profiles of items and then of item blocks were obtained, some manipulations illegitimate from the standpoint of strict scientific logic were used. For example, perhaps unrelated properties were combined in advance into one property, type diagnosis was performed on that basis, and the final socionic profiles ultimately reflected what we ourselves had initially built into our actions.

Although such an assumption is unquestionably and completely false, and this can readily be demonstrated, it is simpler to bypass it altogether by providing not the slightest grounds for such suppositions. Arguing and seriously proving something here by sequentially analyzing the logic of socionic diagnosis would not be the most effective and convincing route (not everyone will be able to understand the mathematical-statistical derivations to the end, and many will not even read the proof to the end). We will therefore take another route and, for purposes of demonstrating the unity of the Se factor, dispense entirely with socionics and with any socionic diagnosis. This, in fact, is why we needed the four experimental item blocks from the SZ questionnaire presented above, because the close correlation among the socionic profiles of absolutely all Se clusters could long ago have been established without these additional experimental blocks.

Let us treat the SZ questionnaire not as a sociodiagnostic questionnaire but simply as a set of answers given by 958 different respondents to its items. For each of the four experimental item blocks we constructed, its magnitude can be calculated for every respondent. The respondents’ answers, after normalization and correction for the influence of social dissimulation, are summed with their signs across all items in each block. Thus, for all respondents, in addition to their answers to the items, we obtain 4 additional variables equal to the sum of their answers to the corresponding items in each of the four blocks. The first variable reflects, in aggregate, the socially “bad” psychological properties whose association with Se we wish to test. The second variable reflects the “good” psychological properties whose belonging to Se is not doubted by potential critics (although in fact they are also partly correlated with Si). It remains to calculate the linear correlation coefficient between the first and second variables across all 958 participants. It proves to be 0,629. This is large and already indicates that both the “bad” and the “good” Se properties belong to one and the same factor, but it is nevertheless smaller than the previously calculated correlation between the corresponding type profiles of these two variables, equal to 0,777. What caused the loss in the magnitude of the correlation coefficient? We now turn to analysis of variance, because it will allow us to extract much more of interest from the results.

The variance of participants’ responses to the items in each block and, correspondingly, the variance of the magnitudes of these two additionally introduced variables consist of several components:

For the first variable (Block no. 1), let us denote the corresponding variance contributions successively as D1, D2, D3. Then: D total = D1+D2+D3. In turn, D1, that is, D contribution of the socionic profile, decomposes into two components: D1с – the variance shared by variables no. 1 and no. 2, and D1н – the variance of the socionic contribution that they do not share. Finally:

We should also keep in mind that D1с / D total is the share of overlapping variance in the total variance, and this share shows what part of the total variance of each variable is explained by socionic factors common to them. In addition, we should remember that, according to mathematical statistics, the square of the correlation coefficient between two variables is always exactly equal to the total proportion of their common, that is, overlapping, shared variance explained by factors common to them.

D3 (the contribution of statistical noise to variance) is nonoverlapping and different for our two variables (because the variables are constructed from different items, and the noise trend changes randomly with each new item).

D2 - the contribution of nonsocionic environmental factors (including upbringing and profession) is also different for the two variables being compared, which are constructed from “bad” and “good” items (because the items in these two variables concern entirely different situations that do not overlap semantically and therefore appeal to different, largely uncorrelated individual life experience).

The second equation follows from the fact that the correlation between the type profiles of the two blocks (that is, of our two variables, which are also calculated without any socionics from the SZ questionnaire) is 0,777. In the case of type profiles, D3 and D4 are identically equal to zero (because the profiles are obtained by averaging many participants and many questionnaires, so the contributions of nonsocionic and random-noise factors are canceled by averaging). Hence:

The correlation between the type profiles of homogeneous item Blocks no. 3 and no. 4 is 0,982. The empirical correlation between the two variables composed of the sums of SZ respondents’ answers to the items in these blocks is 0,875.

For these two variables, let us initially denote the variance contributions using new, now Cyrillic letters, Д1, Д2, Д3, because, generally speaking, these could be quantities different from those for the first two variables. However, Д3 is necessarily equal to D3 (the item scales are the same length, and the SZ respondents are the same for all four variables, so the share of random-noise contribution to the variance is identical in magnitude for all four variables). Д2 (the contribution of occupational and upbringing factors to the responses) is equal in magnitude to the previous D2 (the share of environmental factors in the first variable, representing socially negative Se properties) multiplied by some reducing coefficient k (reducing because the share of “negative” items from the first variable in variables no. 3 and no. 4 has been halved). That is, Д2=D2*k. The magnitude of k can be estimated in different ways, but in any case this coefficient lies in the range from 0,5 to 1 (we will consider both extreme estimates below). Moreover, for variables no. 3 and no. 4, the contribution of Д2 to the variance (unlike for the pair of variables no. 1 and no. 2) becomes common and overlapping between them and works to increase their correlation coefficient – by virtue of the homogeneity and identical cluster similarity of both variables. As can be seen, the magnitude of parameter k throughout the entire range of its probable variation does not affect the calculated magnitudes of D1c and D1н at all and affects D2 and D3 only extremely weakly – the proportions of variance of the socially negative Se-property scale associated, respectively, with the influence of environmental factors on the selective formation of socially negative properties and with the influence of randomness on response selection in the scale items.

Thus, out of the total 100% variance of responses to questionnaire items, responses to the “bad” Se items in the SZ questionnaire have, on average, 40% common (overlapping) variance with responses to the “good” Se items in the same questionnaire (and this variance is associated only with socionic factors), as well as 26% nonoverlapping socionic variance (caused mainly by nonmatching emphases in these items on psychic functions additional to Se, especially Si and Ni), approximately 13% nonoverlapping variance caused by nonsocionic factors of life experience, upbringing, and profession, and approximately 21% nonoverlapping variance due to random statistical noise in each successive choice of responses by the respondent (this latter indicator, generally speaking, depends on scale length – the longer it is, the smaller the indicator, and also on participants’ intelligence and conscientiousness, so it can vary from questionnaire to questionnaire, that is, across different experiments). If environmental influences and random noise in responses are eliminated (by averaging over many questionnaires and many participants), the proportion of overlapping variance in the separate scales of “good” and “bad” Se items rises to 60,5%, corresponding to a correlation coefficient between them of approximately 0,777.

The conclusion of cardinal importance to us is that factors of life experience, upbringing, and profession (that is, nonsocionic environmental factors) contribute three times less variance to responses to Se items (both those with “good” and those with “bad” social meaning) than do purely socionic temperamental factors shared by these scales. If one also takes into account the share of nonoverlapping but likewise socionic factors (associated with an increase in Ni for socially negative properties and an increase in Si for socially positive Se properties), then the contribution of environmental factors to the formation of socially “negative” manifestations of Se is already five times smaller than the purely temperamental influence (when questionnaire testing uses scales about 60 items long, accounting for only 0,132 of the total variance versus 0,656 for all socionic factors). The author believes that this result should put an end to all unfounded assumptions that such socially “unpleasant” Se properties as aggression, tendency toward sadism, hostility, envy, disrespect for other people’s freedom, egocentrism, etc. are allegedly “nonsocionic,” and to claims that these properties are supposedly more closely related to upbringing than to innate stable personality characteristics. The conclusion from the calculations presented is that the analyzed “socially inconvenient” personality characteristics are, with high probability, set at the physiological level, form part of a stable socionic temperament, are most closely and directly associated with Se and, secondarily, with certain other socionic functions, and ultimately may to a considerable extent be genetically determined, being evolutionarily adaptive (genetic determination is indicated at least by the repeatedly demonstrated high genetic determination of human aggressiveness, one of the important and “core” Se clusters, with which all these characteristics are in turn closely correlated). Or, at minimum, in addition to genetic causes, they may partly be formed under the influence not of upbringing but of physiological causes during gestation or the early postnatal period, becoming part of temperament on an equal footing with genetically determined properties.

Similar checks were conducted by the author for other questionnaires with large accumulated numbers of respondents (including the NZ, HS, FS, and other forms), and in all cases results very close to those presented were obtained (the greatest variability is observed for D3 – the variance share of random noise in responses, which can vary from 0,15 to 0,30 across different questionnaires, or more precisely, across different participant samples). It should be noted that D3 has such values for item scales about 60 items long – for shorter scales, and especially for individual questionnaire items, it is substantially higher (the share of random variance for single items with an indistinct meaning can reach as high as 0,85). Conversely, as the number of items in a scale increases without bound, the share of random variance in its results tends toward zero (this occurs more rapidly in samples of careful participants with high intelligence and more slowly in others).

Important note: when we speak of the immanence of one or another marker property to a socionic function (in particular, to Se), we use the results of statistical averages calculated across all surveyed representatives of each socionic type. But what proves to be an immanent property of the statistical mean does not necessarily also constitute an obligatory psychological trait of every member of the group over which the averaging is performed. Therefore, there are absolutely no grounds for asserting the immanence of any psychological cluster (property) that is a marker of Se for every individual person, even if that person has a high personal level of Se; in that case, one may speak only of one or another probability that the property is present in the individual, determined by group statistical tendencies. One basis for this “lack of personal necessity” may be, at the physiological level, the multifactorial (polygenic at the genetic level) nature of the mechanisms supporting any socionic function. Thus, all the group-level Se properties identified above cannot be identified one-to-one with the individual properties of every separate person, even if socionic diagnostic results indicate that the person has high values of this function.

Extraverted Sensing and Evolution

“My dream: that all of China would kneel before me”

Extraverted sensing, together with introverted sensing, is among the evolutionarily oldest psychic functions of all mammalian animals, as well as of most other classes of vertebrates. If introverted sensing formed around feeding behavior, which supports one of the principal vital needs of any organism, then extraverted sensing, as a complex of linked psychological properties, formed around a second and no less important vital need – the reproductive instinct and the sexual competition associated with it.

Intraspecific aggression is invariably connected with the reproductive instinct – whether this is sexual competition before mating, maternal or paternal aggression in defense of offspring, or the most widespread form of aggression – territorial aggression, associated with expelling outsiders from one’s territory, or a particular form of territorial aggression – the struggle for a higher position in the hierarchy of the group.

A higher social rank among group-living animals (which include most primates, Homo sapiens among them) allows high-ranking females to choose a mating partner more effectively and selectively and, most importantly, to obtain feeding advantages for themselves and their offspring. For males it allows mating with a larger number of females, and in some animals the dominant male often completely “privatizes” all females in the group, not permitting subdominant males to mate at all. Among nongregarious animals (for example, lions living in family groups, prides), territorial aggression takes the form of excluding other representatives of the species from one’s hunting territory, which, first, raises the “father of the family’s” chances of being the sole male to mate with the female and, second, raises the entire family’s chances of survival by reserving the territory’s limited hunting resources exclusively for the interests of one’s own family. Among group-living primates (macaques, chimpanzees, baboons, humans), territorial aggression takes the form of competition between neighboring groups of the same species for feeding territory – individuals from another group are not allowed onto one’s own territory and are expelled from it, often with lethal injuries. Similar intergroup competition for territory is observed, for example, among insectivorous meerkats. In addition, group-living primates belong to one of the very few mammalian families in which the struggle for social status and sexual dominance within the group is conducted with particular ferocity, often to the death of a rival (nothing similar occurs in the families of any herbivorous animal species, in canids, or in most species of the cat family).

Thus, among primates, increased intraspecific aggressiveness toward members of one’s own sex (and among females, also toward males that could harm their offspring) is a positive adaptive factor contributing to more successful transmission of one’s genes to the next generation. Intraspecific aggressiveness in primates would have increased still further under selection were it not for three main factors that restrain it in the population gene pool at a more or less reasonable average level. First, excessive aggressiveness can harm one’s own offspring (recall Ivan the Terrible and Peter the Great). Second, increased aggressiveness increases the number of competitive encounters. Although the more aggressive individual wins most of them, outcomes are not always the same, and those duelists who start too many duels also do not live long. Third, habitual physical aggression entails constantly increased energy expenditure by the organism. Under conditions of food abundance this does not matter, but if the group faces hunger, relatively greater advantage within it (including in reproduction) is gained by those individuals that can conserve energy, devote more attention and time to obtaining food, and do not rush headlong into a fight or chase every potential male or female rival.

Increased intraspecific aggressiveness will be an adaptively useful evolutionary trait only if it is also associated with better potential capacities for successful aggression, physical fighting above all. And what does an individual need in order to win a fight, apart from high aggressiveness? First, physical strength (high muscle mass) and rapid muscular mobilization. Second, a large capacity for visual attention that is well distributed in space. Third, rapid adoption of instantaneous and, moreover, unshakable decisions that are not subjected to doubt. Fourth, accelerated metabolism. Fifth, accelerated wound healing (and hence increased immunity). Sixth, low pain sensitivity. Seventh, fearlessness. Eighth, the ability, through one’s “showing off,” to create the impression of an unbeatable fighter and duelist, the ability to build and use the corresponding reputation of being “great and invincible,” causing a rival’s fear and flight through threatening postures alone. Only if all these qualities prove genetically linked with increased aggressiveness will increased intraspecific aggressiveness be evolutionarily useful and become fixed in descendants. This is what actually occurs – increased intraspecific aggressiveness (in all its manifestations) is found in the population to be closely correlated with all the properties listed above, which at first glance have no direct relation to aggression but are nevertheless vitally necessary for ensuring its success (see the list of Se clusters in Table 1 above). It is important here to note that the primary elements in the structure of all properties accompanying Se are specifically increased territorial and sexual aggression, whereas all the other elements popular among socionists in descriptions of Se (including decisiveness, fearlessness, leadership, motor dexterity, high visual attention, etc.) are derivative and unquestionably secondary qualities rather than foundational and primary ones (as, however, certain scholastic socionists who are inclined to idealize Se still mistakenly suppose, or who base their reasoning about the semantics of functions on a natural-philosophical aspectual division of the world into “time,” “space,” “body,” “ether,” “phlogiston,” etc., a scheme that became obsolete in science a century ago).

The conclusion that increased intraspecific aggressiveness plays the core-forming role in the syndrome complex of extraverted sensing properties is confirmed not only by the evolutionary reasoning presented above, but also directly – by analysis of variance. It is precisely the semantic clusters directly associated with intraspecific aggression (and by no means with the notorious “decisiveness,” fearlessness, or any other additional properties) that have the highest exclusive loading on extraverted sensing in the experimentally obtained socionic functional profiles, almost un“clouded” by admixture from the influence of other socionic functions (see Table 1 above).

Pleasure from perceiving another’s pain and fear and the associated tendency toward sadism are a direct consequence of increased intraspecific aggressiveness, and hence of Se. One should not treat the word “sadism” here with excessive emotional criticism – in the context of the phenomenon under discussion, it is merely a designation for the pleasure a subject obtains from observing the results of their own aggressive behavior, which places a rival in territorial aggression in a humiliated and subordinate position. In this sense, such pleasure, experienced more or less frequently and being more or less attractive to a given individual (depending on their individual level of aggressiveness), should be characteristic of almost any primate. Aggression, like any other behavior, requires constant ongoing reinforcement in order to become fixed in behavioral stereotypes. Without such reinforcement in the form of pleasure from the results of aggression, aggressive behavior itself would not exist, and consequently neither would the evolutionary advantages associated with it. The reinforcing role is played by the feeling of pleasure that arises in aggressive personalities from perceiving another’s fear or pain, provoked in the victim either by the subject’s direct aggressive behavior or even before aggression begins, by the mere fact of the aggressor approaching another, subdominant individual. The immediate intracerebral reinforcement here, as with any other kind of psychological reinforcement, is a pleasurable release of dopamine into the synaptic clefts of neurons in the so-called “nucleus accumbens” (a cerebral pleasure center that provides behavioral reward). Another person’s fear and suffering, becoming conditioned reinforcement stimuli that evoke dopamine release, are perceived visually by the aggressor (for example, reinforcing stimuli may include the sight of another person’s submissive postures, grimaces of pain, impotent rage, or the sight of blood - perhaps not coincidentally, the favorite color of the strongest program Se is blood red). Reinforcement is also perceived auditorily, through cries of fear and pain, and by smell (the expression “the smell of fear” is by no means a hyperbole; in a state of fear, a person or other animal begins to sweat excessively, releasing specific pheromones into the surrounding air as a result of increased levels of stress hormones in the blood). All these reactions become positive conditioned reinforcing stimuli for the aggressor. Later they can even take a “compressed” form in memory and imagination – that is, sadistic behavior in such cases begins to bring pleasure even at a distance, without direct observation of the victim, because the victim’s responses that reinforce aggression are supplied by the aggressor’s own memory and, when they appear in imagination, evoke a stimulating and pleasurable release of dopamine in the aggressor’s brain. Thus, sadistic pleasure (that is, pleasure from observing the subordinate position of another individual) is, for strong Se, more a norm than a deviation. It should, however, immediately be stipulated that the habit of obtaining such pleasure apparently develops into what is called “everyday sadism” in far from all strong Se types - only in those who do not limit themselves to occasional pleasures from behaviorally justified instrumental aggression, but instead give themselves over to their so-called “dopamine addiction,” that is, the habit of raising a pleasurable dopamine level in subcortical pleasure centers by repeatedly making an artificial and deliberate return to situations that once elicited this pleasure.

Youth street hooliganism may apparently be regarded as a variety of sadistic behavior. The term itself goes back to prerevolutionary St. Petersburg, where a building of the “State Society for Care” (Gosudarstvennoe obshchestvo prizreniya), a shelter for difficult adolescents (abbreviated “GOP”), stood on Ligovsky Prospekt. In the evenings, the inhabitants of the GOP poured into the street and accosted passersby, tormenting them. The reward was often not even the victim’s wallet, but simply the pleasure of humiliating them and sensing their inability to respond and their helplessness. In Se-oriented police states, youthful harassment of passersby sometimes tries to secure itself by mimicking the ideologemes dictated by the state. The main thing is to keep in step with the wishes or prejudices of the supreme ruler. In Petrine Russia, passersby’s beards were cut off right in the street; under Paul I, who hated waistcoats, waistcoats were torn off passersby in the street; under Nicholas I, armyaks were similarly torn from passersby suspected of unauthorized Slavophilism. In Mussolini’s Italy, gangs of young Blackshirts amused themselves by catching opponents and forcing them, under threat of beating, to drink castor oil. In the late Stalin-era USSR, the Komsomol movement of “brigades assisting the militia,” approved from above, emerged. Members of these brigades hunted “stilyagi” and, right in the street, deriving pleasure from their humiliated and helpless position, cut their flared trousers with scissors (often in the presence of their girlfriends).

Heightened sensitivity to odors is associated with two socionic functions at once – Se and Si, and this has its explanations. Sensitivity to food odors is very important for Si; the complex of properties of this function initially formed during primate evolution around feeding behavior and the fine finger motor skills needed to obtain food (later sensory caregiving also became “linked” with Si, in turn growing out of grooming – the finger-based search for and biting out of parasites in another animal’s fur). Analogously, odors are also very important for Se – but here they are not food odors, but the individual odors of other members of one’s own species. Territorial aggression requires timely detection by smell of the presence of rivals in one’s territory, while individually distinguishing the smell of “one’s own” from that of “outsiders.” In addition, as we wrote in the preceding paragraph, the smell of another’s fear is also an important reinforcing stimulus for intraspecific aggressive behavior. Thus, one might expect that, with generally elevated olfactory sensitivity in both Si and Se, these functions would nevertheless differ in preferential olfactory sensitivity either to food odors or to the odors of other people. This assumption is fully confirmed experimentally – according to questionnaire data, Si leads among all functions in general olfactory sensitivity associated also with taste sensitivity, whereas Se leads in selective sensitivity to human odors (in both cases, the unquestionable dominance of the two sensing functions in the profiles is also accompanied by a moderate elevation of the peaks of the ethical functions, especially Fe).

An individual’s own sweat odor reveals their presence to other members of the same species. On this basis alone one can suppose that weak-Se individuals (who, by their life strategy, avoid competitive encounters) should statistically tend to smell weakly, leaving no trace of their presence in a territory, whereas strong-Se individuals should, conversely, smell strongly, using their odor to demonstrate to everyone that the territory is already occupied and belongs to them. This is what is found in questionnaire studies (see cluster no. 93). Although this property has long since lost significance for humans, it was inherited from primate ancestors and is still detected as a statistical tendency, being linked with human Se.

The property of selfishness and egocentrism (cluster no. 6) proves, in its socionic profile, to be very close to the profiles of territorial aggression, sadistic pleasure, and maliciousness (clusters nos. 1, 3, 5). In the functional profile of this property, in addition to the sharply leading Se peak, there is also a moderate elevation of Ni and a decline of approximately the same magnitude in Ne, Fi, and Fe. Introverted intuition, Ni, is a function of modeling imagined situations in their dynamic development, with the subject’s “self” being an independent participant in all these imagined games, separated from the immediately experienced present moment. Thanks to introverted intuition, the subject’s “self” is multiplied across numerous artificial models and mental reflections. Therefore, among other things, it is precisely Ni that enables a subject to become aware of their “self” as an object that can be separated from the surrounding world, examined, admired, fussed over, and manipulated (one may assert that Ni first appears in animals when they begin recognizing their own reflection in a mirror and understand that it is their reflection). In addition, Ni, being a predominantly temporal-right-hemisphere function, suffers from the constant negative-minor perception of the world characteristic of the entire right temporal lobe, with a tendency invariably to fixate on one’s own dissatisfaction and others’ shortcomings (however, this is what Ni is needed for, because when everything is in order there is no need to model situations mentally). Both ethical functions, Fi and Fe, are collectivist functions supporting interaction among individuals in a group. Ne is also a collectivist function; it experiences reinforcing pleasure when it selflessly shares its discoveries and ideas with other people. Thus, this entire “mixture” of strengthened Ni and weakened Ne, Fi, and Fe also makes a substantial contribution to selfishness alongside the strong Se peak. But Se nevertheless plays the unquestionable leading role here as well. Selfishness is very important in the behavioral complex of intraspecific aggression, increasing evolutionary-adaptive benefits within this selected behavioral strategy (associated with heightened competitiveness and aggressiveness). As the devil-teacher unsuccessfully taught the intuitively dreamy little devil who was failing at devilish studies in a well-known Soviet cartoon: “- To succeed in life you must adore yourself and spit on everyone else, but you do not know how… How are you going to live?” Unlike the cartoon character, possessors of strong Se, in their group tendency, prove according to Table 1 much more successful in this science.

Selfishness, like deceitfulness, entails reputational costs among humans, and therefore neither property is successful or favorable for propagating one’s genes under any behavioral strategy other than one based on aggression and forceful dominance with a consistent “profiteering” style of behavior. Forceful dominance itself does not evoke feelings of love in those around it – its advantages are based not on love but on the fear it produces. In addition to fear in most individuals, such behavior evokes in other strong-Se individuals only envy and the desire to overthrow the dominant individual and take their place. But, protected by others’ fear of their maliciousness, strength, dexterity, and insolence, the aggressive subject can, in the extreme case, allow themselves to do whatever they wish – take things away, rob, deceive for personal gain, slander, rape, take all the best for themselves, and of course look down from the height of their position on everyone else. In fact, such behavior gives the aggressor the greatest evolutionary advantages (we are of course speaking about primitive society), and reputational costs become completely unimportant here. A departure from such a “profiteering” behavioral style would also have rendered all increased intraspecific aggressiveness in primitive society entirely useless from the standpoint of propagating one’s genes and transmitting them to descendants. It is therefore understandable that selfishness, maliciousness, lying, and aggressiveness had to form, and did form, an integral and unitary complex of properties characterizing the optimal Se strategy. Not very many generations have passed since this syndrome complex formed in evolution, and it therefore continues to operate today in nearly its former unchanged form. Although, it must be acknowledged, its adaptiveness is now questionable in some civilized countries.

A distinctive place in the structure of Se is occupied by the tendency toward reduced average daily frequency of urination (cluster no. 41 – a trait that, when it appears in research socionics questionnaires, is sometimes joked about by people who are not very curious and not very knowledgeable about science). In addition to the principal Se peak in the functional profile of this property, there is also some elevation of Ti and a noticeable decline in Fe, and this latter disproportion generally distinguishes men from women and characterizes a masculine behavioral style. One might omit this property altogether, because its profile peaks are indeed weakly expressed, and it is indeed difficult to diagnose reliably with questionnaires - its socionic profile is detected only as a statistical tendency under strong group averaging. It is nevertheless of interest to us because it indirectly and tentatively points to one possible biochemical agent of high Se, namely enhanced development of the brain’s vasopressinergic system. Vasopressin is a hormone that regulates the excretory function of the kidneys; with an elevated level of its production or elevated sensitivity of vasopressin receptors in kidney cells, plethora and inhibition of fluid excretion from the body are observed, of which the property under consideration may be a symptom. On the other hand, contemporary neuroscience over the past 10 years has established that vasopressin also acts as a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, with the brain using the same genetic variants of its receptors as kidney cells. Local vasopressinergic regulation of individual brain regions, markedly more pronounced in males, is believed, among other factors, to influence dominance and aggressive behavior, favor good spatial memory, participate in the formation of sexual attachments, and participate in dividing other individuals into “one’s own” and “outsiders.” According to a number of studies, an overall increase in vasopressinergic activity in the brain due to genes affecting the number and sensitivity of vasopressin receptors leads to some increase in male aggressiveness.

Briefly on Research into the Biological Basis of Se

All mammalian chromosomes occur in pairs, except for the set of sex chromosomes in males (XY instead of XX in females). Chromosomal pairing, in which one chromosome comes from one parent and the other from the other parent, smooths the phenotypic expression of any single mutation (and hence its expression in behavior). Natural selection therefore operates most effectively on the male sex chromosomes, which are present in a single copy. Since, in group-living primates, macaques, chimpanzees, and humans, greater intraspecific aggression primarily helps males compete for females, it is natural to expect that gene loci responsible for aggressive behavior will tend primarily to be located on the unpaired male sex chromosomes. Discoveries of recent decades confirm this: a number of loci associated with aggressive behavior have been identified on the X chromosome. Apparently, corresponding regions may also exist on the Y chromosome (for example, regions responsible for testosterone production and its receptors). But the Y chromosome is greatly reduced in length and has much lower total informational capacity in terms of the number of genes it contains than the X chromosome, so it is reasonable to expect that inherited genes of the X chromosome will more often than genes on other chromosomes influence intraspecific aggressive behavior – something that genetic studies of recent decades have so far confirmed. Probably for this reason, aggressive behavior in women, who have two X chromosomes compared with one in men, is on average less contrastively expressed than the abundance of aggressive male psychopaths in the population: any mutation-related “spike” associated with aggressive behavior on one X chromosome in women is partially neutralized by the influence of genes lacking that mutation on their second X chromosome.

That aggressive behavior in humans has a high heritability was shown as early as the 1970s in the work of John Loehlin, who conducted his research using the twin method. When genetic-engineering methods developed sufficiently to permit intensive research on the human genome, evidence quickly appeared for statistical associations between aggressive behavior and a long series of specific variants of very different genes determining nuances of neurotransmitter transmission – primarily in the dopamine and serotonin systems of the brain. With the development of neuroimaging methods (primarily MRI and fMRI), which made it possible noninvasively and without harm to participants to measure the size of different brain regions in living humans and determine their functional activity during different forms of mental activity, reliable information also appeared concerning statistical relationships between aggressive behavior and the size and/or functional activity of different brain structures. For example, James H. Fallon at the University at Albany in New York found that practically all serial killers show reduced size and activity of the amygdala and adjacent temporal regions of the old and new cortex, together with functional underdevelopment of the prefrontal cortex, especially those regions associated with control of one’s behavior and emotional perception. It also turned out, however, that these structural characteristics are present in Professor Fallon’s own brain and in those of a number of other highly creative people in science - impulsive extraverts, insensitive to their own feeling of fear and to distinguishing other people’s emotions, but by no means uncontrollably aggressive. From the standpoint of socionics we can almost certainly suppose that, in the case of his patients in maximum-security prisons, James Fallon was dealing with people of the SLE psychotype, whereas in his own case and those of other scientists he was dealing with people of the ILE type (that Fallon is an ILE is confirmed by the documentary film Genetic Me, in which Fallon is interviewed). In both cases these are people with irrational extraversion, weak development of rational introverted functions, and, above all, a sharply suppressed, vulnerable Fi. The principal properties of Fi are a tendency toward fears, emotional memories, experiences of shame, and conscience. As numerous contemporary studies show, all these specific properties are precisely supported by a functionally developed amygdala together with the prefrontal cortex, which in this context plays the role of its controller and censor. And although Fallon calls his prison patients aggressive psychopaths and himself and people like him friendly psychopaths, the brain characteristics of killers that he identified are unlikely to have an unambiguous relation to aggressiveness as such or to hyperdevelopment of Se; to a greater extent they indicate underdevelopment of Fi and an almost equal possibility of elevation of either Se or Ne.

The difference specifically sought between Se and Ne is much more likely to lie in subtle characteristics of dopamine transmission in the brain (especially in the thalamus and striatum), which in turn may be genetically and biochemically linked with nuances of neurotransmitter regulation of the hypothalamus. Over the past ten years, many studies have appeared that direct thought in this direction. Thus, the binding potential of D2 receptors in the thalamus apparently very clearly separates sensing and intuitive types (for example, those not prone to schizotypal symptoms from those prone to them, as well as those with high capacity for rapid and accurate motor learning from those without such capacity). Moreover, such a role of thalamic dopamine receptors is readily explicable – sensory streams are filtered in the thalamus, and different receptor characteristics can lead to different quality of filtering and selection of information passed onward and upward to the frontal cortex (and today we already know firmly that differences in the selection and filtering of information entering the higher brain regions are precisely what distinguish sensing from intuitive types). As for the hypothalamus, it has long been known (since the 1950s) that stimulating different nuclei within it, including nuclei located very close to one another but nevertheless having different innervation, can produce bursts of uncontrolled sexuality and, when current strength is changed, rage and aggression. Stimulation of neighboring nuclei can, by contrast, suppress such behavior. Although this question still cannot be considered well studied, it is entirely possible that common genetic factors exist that simultaneously and selectively influence both the sensitivity of hypothalamic nuclei and the characteristics of information filtering in the thalamus – this would explain the high correlation of a number of properties of hypothalamic and thalamic origin observed within the unitary syndrome of high Se.

On Methodological Shortcomings in the Psychological Component of Contemporary Neurogenetic and Neuroimaging Research

Unfortunately, most contemporary scientific studies devoted to investigating the genetics and neurophysiological basis of psychological traits, even those conducted in very reputable university laboratories, have extremely serious shortcomings in the psychological component of their methodological support - which to this day greatly reduces their effectiveness and informativeness and slows scientific progress in this direction. Let us examine this issue in more detail.

Compared with other personality classifications in differential psychology, contemporary socionics provides the most complete description of practically all innate personality properties of a person. A functional profile consisting of the values of the 8 socionic functions characterizing an individual describes approximately 96% of the variance of all possible personality properties at the innate, that is, temperamental level, while a full type profile, representing a quantitative measure of an individual’s proximity to each of the 16 “standard” socionic psychotypes, describes almost 100% of this variance. Unlike factors distinguished by different psychologists within trait theory on the basis of formally performed factor analysis, socionic functions are located in the multidimensional space of psychological properties in such a way that they are readily understandable and explicable in terms of the adaptive benefits and even the stages of their evolutionary formation, and consequently they are maximally close to the objective physiological and genetic factors that underlie individual differences in brain function among different people. Full socionic profiles constructed on the basis of our fragmentary information about a given person make it possible subsequently to predict accurately those characteristics of that person that were not reported when the profiles were constructed (see, for example, [10]).

When interpreting the results of James Fallon’s experiment described in the preceding section of the article, which showed substantial hypofunction of the amygdala and temporal lobes in imprisoned serial killers, a competent socionist in Fallon’s place would not have drawn the erroneous conclusion that aggression is associated with reduced amygdala size, but would immediately have said that in serial killers, according to socionic principles, one should expect both increased aggression in the form of a large increase in Se and, simultaneously with it (but not dependent on it), a deficit of empathy, sympathy, and compassion associated with a sharp decline of Fi in socionic profiles. Therefore Fallon’s results concerning reduced amygdala size and hypofunction of the temporal lobes may relate not to increased aggression, that is, not to Se, but to the empathy deficit, that is, to a deficit of socionic “introverted ethics.” The role of the amygdala in supporting feelings of fear, pangs of conscience, and the encoding of negative emotional experience is known from many other studies, and according to socionic experimental data these belong primarily to the complex of Fi, introverted ethics, properties. A socionist would therefore immediately have predicted amygdala hypofunction both in criminals and in creative scientists, because socionics knows that a deficit of Fi occurs in two different psychological types among the 16, one member of this pair being the most pronounced aggressor in the socion (SLE), while the other differs only slightly from the population mean in aggression but is frequently found among major scientists (ILE).

Moreover, instead of taking and studying highly unusual psychological samples, united by unclear psychological markers (such as “criminals,” “psychopaths,” “creative people,” “athletes,” “air-traffic controllers,” “schizothymic individuals,” etc.), in very expensive physiological studies aimed at finding physiological markers of psychological traits, a socionist would conduct fMRI and genetic studies on a random sample of volunteers, ensuring control over representation in the sample and preferably equal representation of all 16 psychological types. The socionist would then examine which psychic functions and which socionic traits correlate in that sample with particular physiological characteristics of the brain. Only after that, to make the results more persuasive to the general public and the study’s sponsors, one could add an additional “professional” sample to the research program in which these psychic functions should be extreme, for example criminals, air-traffic controllers, or someone else.

Unfortunately, not only in Fallon’s experiment but in most other expensive physiological studies of individual brain characteristics, everything is done quite differently in their psychological component. Examining just one volunteer participant with an fMRI and MRI protocol often costs several thousand or even tens of thousands of dollars. In the psychological part of the experiment, however, researchers usually use either some achievement test vague in terms of its underlying psychological factors or, at most, a single short self-report scale of 20-30 items, again measuring some psychological property chosen almost arbitrarily (often one that, by its nature according to the items on the scale, is clearly complex, that is, according to socionics, supported by several functions simultaneously). For example, many expensive neuroimaging studies are devoted to investigating people with high creativity. Creativity is measured either with self-report scales involving Ne, Ni, and Fe, or with achievement tests, for example the classic test in which one must generate as many possible uses as possible for some object within a limited time. In the latter test, high scores are promoted, first, by general extraversion (speed of action), then by general intelligence, and then, more specifically, by two particular functions - Ne and Se (with the role of these two functions in the results being almost equal). It is understandable that the physiological correlates identified by two different methods of measuring creativity, scales and achievement tests, do not coincide across different researchers (and should not coincide), while within each individual study it is also impossible to determine which particular psychological factor the identified physiological correlates belong to.

Genetic studies have analogous defects when they identify which gene variants (when constructing an individual sampled map of the human genome) correlate with particular psychological characteristics of behavior. For example, the conclusions of a study may state that propensity for risk coincided with predominance of such-and-such gene variants in the genome. One researcher then confirms these conclusions in their sample, while another does not. Which of them should be believed, and what do these suspect gene variants actually determine? Do they really determine propensity for risk? Hardly. In its socionic profile, propensity for risk has elevated peaks of Se, Ne, and even Ni, as well as sharply negative peaks of Si, Fi, and partly Ti (see Table 7).

Thus, if some study obtains a positive correlation between a particular gene variant and propensity for risk, this correlation may be produced by different causes:

  • an association of this gene with increased Se;
  • an association of this gene with increased Ne;
  • an association of this gene with increased Ni;
  • an association of this gene with decreased Si;
  • an association of this gene with decreased Fi (recall here the amygdala defect described a couple of paragraphs above in Fallon’s studies);
  • an association of this gene with decreased Ti;
  • or the gene simultaneously having several of the associations listed above.

Therefore, on the basis of detecting a statistical relationship between some gene variant and such a complex psychological property as propensity for risk (which only at first glance appears simple and elementary), it will simply be impossible to identify the genetic nature of the genuine psychological factors underlying this property. And there is also the problem of sample construction. Let us imagine for a moment that a certain gene variant found to be associated with high propensity for risk has this association because it codes the balance between Ne and Si (incidentally, a quite plausible situation for some candidate genes). We should probably not be surprised if, through the same gene, although to a lesser extent, the balance between Ni and Se also increases (again in favor of intuition). Then, if the experimental sample of participants whose genetic maps were obtained and whose propensity for risk was tested consists predominantly of a mixture of pronounced Ne types and pronounced Si types, the researcher will find a very high positive correlation between propensity for risk and our candidate gene in that sample. Now let us imagine that another researcher has a different sample, in which strong Se types and strong Ni types are most strongly represented. The sign of the correlation between the gene and propensity for risk in that sample will already be the opposite! It is therefore easy to suppose that most contradictions in the published results of genetic experiments by different researchers are explained not by chance, but by differences in the samples used in terms of the composition and percentage of participant psychotypes represented in them.

Thus, competent methodological support for the psychological component of any experiments aimed at finding relationships between the psychological and physiological levels of the person must necessarily include several conditions:

- First, the researcher must obtain a full temperamental-psychological personality profile for all participants, including values for all psychological factors describing personality, rather than limiting themselves to a single psychological scale measuring one psychological property. In an acceptable version, this could be a description in the language of the “Big Five” personality factors, at least that, but it is still better (and much better) if it is a full socionic profile (type, trait, or functional), which can be obtained with good reliability for almost all people of average intelligence or above using questionnaires approximately 250-300 items long. Recall that the MMPI questionnaire, for example, consists of 566 items – twice as many. The use of questionnaires shorter than 200 items to obtain a multifactor profile is unacceptable – even in people with somewhat above-average intelligence they do not provide the necessary accuracy. Nevertheless, in studies where researchers do attempt to measure several psychological indicators in participants at once, this “economizing” on the number of items occurs everywhere. Recall that in studies where the physiological component of the experiment itself costs the research laboratory several thousand dollars per participant, while volunteer participants receive compensation above 500 dollars for participation (and sometimes much more), economizing on the time required to complete the psychological questionnaire is simply foolish.

- Second, as already stated, a socionic profile is much more preferable than the values of 5-6 factors obtained from questionnaires such as the “Big Five,” “HEXACO,” etc. Let us explain why. Only socionics distinguishes and calculates eight psychic functions whose complete hierarchical quantitative profile almost completely describes the personality-temperamental characteristics of a given person. The direction of the “factor axes” of these functions and their semantic content are much more physiological than the direction and semantics of the factors distinguished in “Big Five” or “HEXACO” factor models, where factors are obtained from distorted samples, tend in their directions toward linguistic culture rather than human physiology, often “wander” in direction across different researchers, and overlap in unclearly distinguished content (in “HEXACO”). In addition, only crude short questionnaires (around 100 items), oriented toward mass work with large samples rather than expensive fMRI experiments in which research costs are high and samples are very small (usually around 20 people), have been developed and used worldwide to obtain “Big Five” and “HEXACO” scores; in such experiments, maximum accuracy of psychological measurement is required to obtain results of any reliability. The main advantage of socionics is, of course, its use of a functional representation alongside the factorial, trait representation. Traits (the only entities used in factorial personality models) are already an averaging and generalization of several functions. Relying only on traits, as occurs in the “Big Five” or “HEXACO,” we will always operate only with the sum of influences from four functions at once, each of which may nevertheless have its own physiology and its own genetic code. Thus, under a trait approach, instead of studying the properties of Ne and Se separately, we will always study a mixture of influences from Ne, Ni, Se, and Si. This is a deliberate reduction in the resolving power of the physiological experiment with respect to its psychological correlates, and so far only socionics has learned to avoid this reduction. The fact that most researchers conducting experiments of this kind know nothing about contemporary socionics (which, owing among other things to the author’s work, has now moved very far beyond simply assigning a person one of 16 types, as it did in Aušra’s time) does not excuse them.

- Third, any participant sample, large or small (and especially a small one), must be controlled for the composition and proportion of psychotypes represented in it. Before calculating any correlations between psychological- and physiological-level indicators in a sample heterogeneous in type composition, a procedure for mathematically equalizing the type composition of the sample should first be performed, consisting of multiplying all indicators for each participant by the square root of the proportion represented by that participant’s psychotype in the sample. This too is currently done nowhere and never, and as a result a researcher’s conclusions about detected relationships (even their sign, let alone magnitude) can easily prove erroneous and artifactual in small samples.

Extraverted Sensing and the Development of Society

In genetic anthropology it is believed that our principal ancestors, Cro-Magnons, who migrated approximately 60-80 thousand years ago from central Africa into Europe and Asia, did not differ very greatly in their gene pool from the contemporary indigenous inhabitants of central and southern Africa. Observing the customs of the contemporary indigenous peoples of these regions of the African continent, one can hypothesize that ethical functions, especially Fe, and perhaps also Se, are represented above average in their averaged integral psychotype (selection for Se and Fe, at least until several centuries ago, could quite plausibly have been promoted among any peoples of the Earth by life in flat, unforested terrain, which led to frequent clashes in which larger and stronger groups prevailed, and by a warm seasonless climate that did not require priority development of Si and provident, planning logical functions). In Europe 60-80 thousand years ago, Cro-Magnons encountered and partially mixed their gene pool with that of the local indigenous inhabitants, the Neanderthals. Studies comparing the genome of contemporary Europeans with preserved genome fragments in fossil Neanderthal bones and teeth have shown that the contemporary European has about 5-6% of their genes inherited from Neanderthals. At the same time, what contemporary science knows about Neanderthal lifestyle and culture makes it possible to suppose that their behavioral phenotype was much more logical and less emotional than that of Cro-Magnons (in particular, singing, dancing, and visual art were not developed among them, while the ratio of ring-finger to index-finger length, correlated in the contemporary population through common testosterone mechanisms with the logic-ethics balance, was precisely of the kind found in contemporary logical types). Neanderthals also lived in small communities (logic, introversion), were homebodies (Si), and even had better manual skills than Cro-Magnons (again introverted sensing, Si). It is difficult to judge their intuitive functions; perhaps, compared with contemporary humans, they were represented in their gene pool as weakly as among Cro-Magnons, or even more weakly. But in any case, in rationality, logic, and Si, contemporary inhabitants of Europe and Asia drew a great deal from Neanderthals, who overall nevertheless proved noncompetitive when they encountered the fairly strong average Se and the high gregariousness that further increased its power among the incoming primitive Cro-Magnons.

After this great migration of peoples, for tens of thousands of years both sensing functions completely dominated the intuitive functions in the gene pool of all human peoples. Initially this did not impede the development of civilization and even helped it. Warlike Se was the main progressive function at that time because it pushed forward human reproduction and settlement. In later times, with the emergence of civilization and states, the role of Se in relation to progress became dual. On the one hand, Se, by impelling territorial conquest, contributed to the emergence of large states and empires, in which the needs of governance and of maintaining organized existence across new enormous territories necessarily advanced the development of transport, writing, architecture, and urban infrastructure. But this compelled progress was largely carried out not by strong-Se people themselves. People with strong Se seized power and administrative control, served in armies, undertook distant military campaigns involving new territorial conquests (or without them, merely for exercise and pleasure), or simply robbed travelers on the roads. In states with stabilized borders that now lived not through constant plundering of their neighbors (already impoverished and plundered three times over) but through their own economy and trade, domination of Se in governance became an obstacle to further development. Se is not altruistically oriented toward the common good – that is one; Se is oriented toward taking away rather than adding – that is two; a bearer of very strong Se in any case intends to live better and, above all, higher than their fellow tribesmen – that is three. Such potentials, without intensive “exhaust” of this energy outward, inevitably lead to parasitism on members of society who produce useful products; when this parasitism completely afflicts political power and administrative organs, which Se is always eager to control, the development of society stops altogether or even moves backward. Great empires invariably died from this disease – the Assyrian, Egyptian, Roman, and Aztec empires. Because their development had stopped and because of internal Se parasitism, they simply perished in encounters with still greedier and more ambitious incoming neighbors who had not yet sunk into imperial rigidity.

At least 10 thousand years ago, the gene pool of all peoples apparently already contained all the contemporary genes responsible for the potential strengthening and granting of a dominant role to any of the 8 psychic functions of modern humans. If in those ancient times, and even much later, intuition was still “suppressed” and sensing functions dominated everywhere, this was not because the mutations required for intuition did not exist in the gene pool, but because selection invariably favored sensing. In any case, polygamy and plural marriage, practiced almost universally until the spread of Christianity, contributed substantially to natural selection for higher Se. The reason is primarily that when brides are scarce and there is an excess of potential husbands on the market, men with strong extraverted sensing generally gain an advantage in sexual competition and subsequent gene reproduction. In a society dominated by military-force values, they are both richer and occupy higher-status positions in the hierarchy; moreover, they consciously strive for large harems, and, in addition, they also appear in a more favorable light (that is, fit the fashionable trend) in the eyes of most contemporary women.

Christianity, which spread in Europe at the beginning of our era, could strongly change the vector of sexual selection in Europe – monogamy and single marriage began giving approximately equal chances for gene reproduction to all men, both sensing and intuitive, while under these conditions less warlike introverted sensing and intuitive types even gained an advantage over more warlike extraverted sensing types – the latter died more often in wars and other conflicts and therefore, on average, managed to leave fewer offspring. This vector of selection toward intuition proved even more contrastively expressed among monogamous European Jews. Living in a hostile religious-cultural environment and frequently risking both property and life for this reason, Jews, once very aggressive (if the Old Testament is to be believed), could now simply not afford strong Se, because any provocative behavior in a country foreign in religion, culture, and language was mortally dangerous. Advantage was given to “quiet” functions that avoid provocative intraspecific competition, while against this background intuitive inventiveness, which brought prosperity but did not generate conflicts with the majority population of another faith, provided maximum advantages for survival and the feeding of large families. To this day, the descendants of European Ashkenazi Jews are apparently the most intuitively “advanced” part of humanity (hence, unfortunately, the high incidence of schizophrenia as well, which, regrettably, also tends toward intuitive genes). In addition, Si also appears to be fairly strong in their gene pool (there are even jokes about the caregiving of Jewish mothers). But the simultaneous substantial weakening of Se in their gene pool also had negative consequences – schizophrenia has already been mentioned, but on a large scale this negative effect “played out” only once in their history, during the Second World War, when millions of European Jews submissively and almost without a single rebellion (weak Se) went to Hitler’s camps and practically inevitable extermination. Hence, incidentally, the conclusion: there are no good and bad functions, and a balanced combination of the genes underlying them is usually beneficial to the gene pool of a nation.

We have presented these examples exclusively to show the rapid variability in the proportion of genes for different psychic functions represented in a social gene pool – with a corresponding direction of the selection vector, very substantial shifts can occur in a nation’s genotype and phenotype after only several generations. Vikings were once famous for their widespread Se-Beta cruelty and ferocity – yet contemporary Norway and Sweden, in their collective mentality, are the most peaceful and introverted-sensing countries among all those that may exist on the planet (corresponding genetic shifts in them began after Christianity became established, and changes in the gene pool apparently became especially pronounced when, along with these countries being pushed to the margins of European politics, the fashion for military valor was replaced by a fashion for solid economic management). Genetics of laboratory and domesticated animals has likewise clearly shown (in mice and cattle, among others) that aggressiveness has very high heritability and that artificial selection for the level of aggressiveness makes it possible, in only three or four generations, to breed practically pure lines of highly and weakly aggressive animals.

In contemporary civilized society, the positive role of extraverted sensing for society as a whole is clearly not very great and is partly even problematic (although only a few hundred years ago it was the most important function for humans). The reason is that the unquestionably positive physiological qualities incidentally accompanying extraverted sensing, such as physical strength, visual attention, and good spatial coordination (see Table 1), have ceased to be so important and irreplaceable. Individual physical strength has ceased to be important for society altogether, while capacities for concentration of attention and spatial coordination, still useful in a number of occupations, are excellently duplicated by introverted sensing. It is enough to say that in the first group of Soviet cosmonauts, with its extremely strict selection for attention, decision speed, and spatial coordination, there was only one clear extraverted sensing type (Gagarin), while most other members of the group were clearly expressed introverted sensing types (Titov, Leonov, Grechko). Overall, even such apparently unquestionably positive Se properties as excellent visual memory and rapid and accurate visual perception have now become more an atavism for humanity than a condition of survival. Thus, the 11-year-old chimpanzee Ayumu in one laboratory now demonstrates by example how far humanity has regressed in these abilities compared with apes. In 60 milliseconds the chimpanzee recognizes and remembers which digit is shown in each of nine squares scattered across a computer screen and then, after the traces of these digits are erased from the eye with masking stimuli and the now-empty squares are presented one second later, confidently and without error indicates with a finger in two seconds the exact positions of all the digits in ascending order. No living human today is capable of such sensory feats, even bearers of strong Se (although they still retain a large advantage in this capacity over other people, they nevertheless perform several times worse than our more sensing but less intuitive ancestors, in particular the chimpanzee Ayumu – compared with him, even the best human operators require not 60 ms but 200 ms, and they make errors more often).

On the other hand, the egocentric and aggressively destructive potential of extraverted sensing has been preserved in humans and partly harms society, because in contemporary society, where possibilities for external aggressive expansion are sharply limited, extraverted sensing often begins parasitizing the internal society, while in politics it still shifts the focus of attention toward conquest rather than constructive work.

Although the domination of extraverted sensing inherited from earlier times conflicts with the developmental needs of contemporary human civilization, which already requires more equal representation of all psychic functions in society’s “reserve,” the vector of natural selection over the past two centuries has most likely turned in its favor again. This may be caused by the fact that contemporary bearers of its genes have ceased dying in wars and duels, and by the fact that unconditional monogamy of marriage, including in European civilization, has ceased to be a mandatory cultural rule. Contemporary society does not concern itself with genetically supporting the other psychic functions, while extraverted sensing under these conditions pushes its own way toward a leading position. There are grounds to believe that, in terms of its gene pool, contemporary humanity is already on average noticeably more “Se-oriented,” and therefore somewhat more aggressive and consumerist, than at the end of the 19th century. The problems that civilization will soon face because of this new trend are ignored today by society and politicians and are visible only to some scientists, but in the near future they will affect everyone very strongly. Perhaps this will be bad, perhaps good, but today’s genetic trends will force major restructuring of the customary way of life tomorrow, and the consequences need to be forecast today.

Extraverted Sensing and Power

Power, power, power, unlimited power – this is what strong extraverted sensing is very strongly drawn to (see cluster No. 30), but at the same time it is something that, at least in the modern world, should be placed in its hands only with great caution and only under effective and independent public oversight. Se is more strongly drawn to power than other functions and therefore knows better than any of them how to handle power, but, unfortunately, it is driven toward power by a deeply egocentric motivation. In the socion there are 7 psychotypes whose attraction to power is above the average level (SLE, SEE, LSI, LSE, LIE, EIE, ESE – this is their descending order, according to cluster No. 30). However, the desirability of their being in power – not from the standpoint of any particular psychotype, but from the standpoint of the objective interests of modern society as a whole - should, in the author’s personal opinion, form a completely different sequence. For example, this one: LSE, LIE, ESE, SEE, EIE, SLE, LSI. Moreover, into this latter sequence, which is far more optimal in its ordering, one should also insert, in its first half, those psychotypes that are both capable of governing (strategically or tactically) and at the same time have no need at all for people to kneel before them: LII, ILE, SEI, ILI, ESI, SLI.

Power and politics gravitate toward logical types, or, put differently, logical types are much more interested in politics than ethical types. For this reason, power in which the values of the second quadra predominate is always much more tightly coupled with extraverted sensing than power adhering to the values of the third quadra, where logical types have valued but, on average, not especially strong Se, subordinate to intuition. The power of the second quadra is also much more despotic and inclined to suppress the individual – in the third quadra this is impeded not only by the moderation of Se among its logical types, but also by its valued Fi and the general extra-functional “democratic” individualism aimed at valuing one’s own and others’ freedom. Because in the second quadra Se is coupled with logic, the logical-sensory types of the second quadra are simultaneously the most “greedy” for power. Even if, for example, a representative of the EIE psychotype stands at the top of the power pyramid, almost the entire echelon of power immediately below him will usually consist of logical types from his quadra. During periods of revolutionary events, however, a mass influx of Beta logical-sensory types into politics never began immediately; it was always preceded by a period of waiting. Beta Se combined with Ti respects the established hierarchy – it begins attacking the existing authorities in order to obtain “its own piece of the pie” only when the former hierarchy has already obviously been destroyed and cannot be restored. Until that point, Beta Se avoids initiating revolution and much more often acts as a guardian of the existing order of things (this applies more strongly to the LSI psychotype; SLEs, on average, enter the fight on the side of the “ruckus” somewhat earlier). But, in any case, practically all revolutions known in world history began not with “Beta” at all.

Any revolutionary turn that resolves a mature crisis of the existing power system is usually initiated at first, at the level of stirring public opinion and the first, riskiest revolutionary steps, by logical-intuitive types of the first quadra. At the next stage, the stage of mutual provocations and heroic confrontation, “Caesars” may join them en masse (that is, representatives of the SEE type; recall Father Gapon and Leon Trotsky during the Revolution of 1905). But for most of this time Beta extraverted sensing either waits or still defends the existing regime (incidentally, this was precisely the position of the indisputable LSI Maximilien Robespierre during the initial stage of the French Revolution). Beta Se enters the struggle on the side of the revolution en masse when the fall of the former regime has already become obviously inevitable, violence attractive to Se begins in the streets, and redistribution of power and wealth becomes possible in society. At this stage many Beta types join the revolution, rather than only their small advanced detachment consisting of the most riotous and power-deprived among them. The average group tactic of the rising Beta wave is to inflame violence and civil war (that is, the fight that inevitably begins in a predatory pack to establish a new power hierarchy after the former Akela has missed). Broad uneducated classes are drawn en masse into this bloody fight; they are the most susceptible to the simplificatory rhetoric characteristic of extraverted-sensing leaders, which appeals to atavistic human biological instincts (Se, being closely connected in its mechanisms with the functioning of the brain’s hypothalamus, is the human and primate psychic function closest to simple instincts). In any case, this was so both during the Great French Revolution and during the Russian Revolution of 1917. Analogous stagewise processes (at least elements of them) are not difficult to discern in the Ukrainian events of 2014-2016. In every case, the subsequent fate of social change depends on whether extraverted sensing, once released into “revolutionary freedom,” is brought under control in time. And this already concerns not only Beta Se, which actively pulls power apart and reconcentrates it in its own hands.

Even if the Beta wave in a revolution can be restrained, which neither the French nor the Russian Revolution managed to do, problems inevitably arise at the next stage with the equally egocentric extraverted sensing of Gamma types, who enter the revolutionary elite with initially quite sincere liberal rhetoric and sometimes with money that the revolution very much needs - but after the revolution’s first victories they begin actively and hastily, with no further regard for the common interest, to “grab” for their own egocentric benefit the best pieces of property and financial flows. Alongside SLEs, strong and valued Gamma Se types can corrupt the new revolutionary authorities in the most irresponsible way. Some LIEs attempt to take control of finances, some SEEs of public political power, and for this purpose both psychotypes (more precisely, individual and not the best, but, as in the case of Beta, their most egocentric representatives) destabilize without a qualm the entire system that was laboriously established after the revolution but has not yet grown strong. Dangerous processes belonging specifically to this stage can also be observed in Ukrainian society in 2016. An atmosphere of corrupt division inevitably discredits the revolution among the masses, and here Beta sensing may sometimes reappear on the scene in the person of still-restless active far-right forces, deceptively proclaiming itself the “savior of the nation,” and by this effect pushing everyone else aside through simplificatory demagoguery, violence, and threats. This is precisely what happened to the French Revolution after the corrupt Directory, which gave way to the Beta Bonapartist coup. The Russian Revolution of 1917 simply did not live to reach this stage, because already at its second stage power was seized from the liberals by the Beta dictatorship of the Bolsheviks. In short, from the standpoint of regular socionic processes in society, revolution is by no means a simple matter, and if it is not to end in an even more repugnant dictatorship than the pre-revolutionary one, one must know not only how to begin it, but also how to end it at exactly the right time, before extraverted-sensing processes in society become uncontrollable.

Good government is always government controlled by all eight functions. In principle, this applies to any purely quadral rule. But for all quadras except the second, purely quadral rule is possible perhaps only in the management of some private company. At the level of states, however, only power coupled with Ti and with very strong Se can be purely quadral, and this is the power of Beta and its values. Power based solely on Beta values is, by definition (that is, on the basis of those values), the most egocentric and, unfortunately, always gravitates, primarily for the purpose of retaining and prolonging itself, toward violence and dictatorship. Its style can be traced through a number of historical examples discussed in detail in our work http://sociotoday.narod.ru/tabl.html (in particular, see there the articles on a number of LSIs: the Roman emperor Domitian, Maximilien Robespierre, Emperor Nicholas I, Joseph Stalin, Charles de Gaulle, Recep Erdoğan - who brought Atatürk’s course in the country to an end, as well as on a number of SLEs: Peter I, Napoleon Bonaparte, Vladimir Lenin, Benito Mussolini, etc.). Here we shall consider only the most basic and typical features of Beta political regimes.

An individual person (whether a Beta or an Alpha type does not matter) possesses all 8 psychic functions. As shown in the author’s latest version of “Model T” (not yet published), valued functions differ only in that the program function can directly address any of them, without the need for any external stimulation and without intermediary functions (just as they can directly address the program function). Non-valued functions are for this reason much more unconscious, but they too can be strong, operating directly in response to external stimuli while bypassing the program function. Although Fi is non-valued in some people and therefore exists only in the subconscious, in many it is nevertheless strong enough for them to feel ashamed of lying and unethical behavior. Any ruling regime, however, is deprived of this ordinary human nature: in a coarse-grained way it gravitates only toward the conscious, valued functions of its own quadra, while ignoring the other functions altogether. This is especially true of Beta regimes, which, because of Ti, Se, and the “aristocratism” characteristic of the quadra, are particularly inclined toward quadral “purity” in their own ranks, with suppression and expulsion from public life of the values of other quadras. LSIs, SLEs, and even many EIEs with strengthened Se (recall here Hitler, Verwoerd, and Mao Zedong) are almost always ideological proponents of “unanimity,” striving to reduce the people of their country to a “common denominator.” In addition, in their group tendency LSIs and SLEs perceive life as a struggle among packs-groupings for absolute power. Within this mentality, one is expected always to remain loyal to one’s own group and to strive at any cost for the victory of one’s grouping (loyalty to the aggressive pack is regarded as the highest value). Here the end justifies any means, and after victory the victor is entitled to dictate his rules not only to the defeated but to the entire population. Therefore, when extraverted-sensing Beta regimes become established in one state or another, the restricted set of valued functions they recognize is accompanied by a number of serious deficiencies (at least from the standpoint of non-Beta types).

First, as history shows, the core-forming ideas of these regimes almost inevitably become violence and continuous war. War against an internal enemy (for example, diligently invented spies, traitors, saboteurs), civil war, war for expansion of the empire, simply some pointless war on the outskirts of the world waged for the sake of the process of war itself, to create pretexts for tightening the screws around “national unity” and exercising muscular self-respect — under a Beta regime there will necessarily be at least one war, if not four at once. It is entirely within the values of many Beta sensory types, who, being logical types, set the tone in their quadra, to believe that a generation deprived of war has thereby been deprived by fate. For Se, the existence of enemies (rivals) is a pleasure and a vital necessity important for the function’s self-realization (Stalin’s doctrine of the intensification of class struggle and the growth in the number of enemies of the people as socialism advances is a vivid example of this). War is attractive to Beta sensory types also because it spreads the cult of force and increases the influence of carriers of Se. Since the chief pleasures of sensory Beta are rivalry in status and physical force, provoking an arms race and international tension becomes an inevitable additional bonus of its rule. International power rivalry inflamed by extraverted-sensing types also negatively affects countries with democratic regimes — in response, they too are forced to expend enormous resources unproductively on strengthening the army, security services, and military-industrial complex. Incidentally, there is also a dangerous inverse relationship — the more strongly institutions with traditional Beta influence (the military-industrial complex and security structures) develop in a given country, even if reactively, and the greater their social role becomes, the greater also becomes the risk of the irreversible emergence of its own extraverted-sensing Beta regime. It was in precisely this way that dictatorships arose in a number of small European states before the Second World War. In terms of the already high role of Beta structures of the state, even the modern United States, despite all its systems of political checks and balances sanctified by several centuries, must unfortunately be regarded prospectively as a potentially weak link (in a country with such a powerful army, security services, and military-industrial complex, any serious systemic crisis may entail the untimely rise of Beta authoritarianism; for this it would be enough merely to replace liberals in half of Congress, without even changing their party affiliation, with representatives of the security establishment). The United States, which plays an exceptional role in the modern world, has already come close to this dangerous boundary at least three times in history. The first time was during the corrupt presidency of General Grant, immediately after the end of the Civil War, which everywhere in the country strengthened profiteers and security-force types. The second time was after the United States’ victory in the Second World War and after its acquisition of atomic weapons, during the years of McCarthyism in the early 1950s (thank God, Eisenhower, personally distant from extraverted sensing and Beta values, brought this period to an end). The third very dangerous period was the strange presidency of George W. Bush, during which real power fell into the hands of the oil lobby, the military-industrial complex, and the security services, while policy, right up to the end of his presidency, became not merely aggressive but also domestically profiteering, suppressive of civil liberties, fear-mongering, and deceitfully vile.

Second, purely Beta rule is, unfortunately, poorly capable of intensively developing its country, making use of all internal possibilities for its economic development, or creating a cozy and comfortable social environment for people — the Te, Ne, and Si required for this are absent from its values, while Se actively interferes with the solution of all these tasks. Comforts can exist under extraverted-sensing Beta domination, but only for the chosen few (recall here the German Democratic Republic, GDR); these comforts will be separated from the rest of the country by a high opaque fence, and the few inhabitants of these relatively well-appointed reservations will likewise be obliged to live in constant and quite uncomfortable fear of the principal Beta leader. But even these oases will shrink as the regime, still temporarily existing within a relatively free market economy, slides toward totalitarian dictatorship (and this is, as a rule, an inevitable process). The point is that as a Beta state based on force values develops, an ever larger part of the budget is seized by the military-industrial complex, which supplies the principal needs of sensory-Beta rulers, that is, the showy status needs of their force sensing. Since the remaining branches of the national economy are plundered in the process, budgetary funds within a market economy soon cease to be sufficient even for the military-industrial complex. It all ends with the introduction of a mobilizational war economy and the predictable abandonment of the market economy (following the model of Stalin’s reforms of 1929, which put an end to the NEP, North Korea, Castro’s Cuba, or, in a somewhat milder and more initial economic variant — Hitler’s Germany, which in the short period of its existence apparently simply did not have time to “mature” into the order of North Korea).

Third, under Beta regimes flagrant inequality among citizens becomes inevitable — their economic inequality, inequality of their social and civil rights, and their inequality before the law. An extraverted-sensing Beta society is a society of a power hierarchy; therefore, whoever is stronger and more powerful is also more in the right. At the top of its social pyramid there is necessarily a narrow group of people or, still more often, a single person, with whom the interests of the country are completely identified — and soon the entire country begins working to satisfy the Se needs of this one person. Turkey in the era of Recep Erdoğan may be cited as an example, where this gentleman is completing, “for himself,” a Beta police regime with the “tough-guy” values typical of Beta sensory types. The presidential palace that Erdoğan (LSI) built for himself with budget funds surpassed in its enormousness and grandeur even the presidential palace built two decades earlier by the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. Under Erdoğan, Turkey abruptly rose to second place in the world among one hundred developed countries in material inequality among citizens and in concentration of capital - 1% of the population of the Turkish Republic owns 54% of the national wealth. At the same time, in countries relatively “non-Beta” in their systems, this indicator is: in the USA 37%, in Germany 30%, England 23%, Norway 25%, Japan - only 19%, that is, several times lower (http://newsru.com/1847807.html ).

Fourth, historical examples from the past teach that under purely Beta regimes there is no freedom; all civil liberties are systematically destroyed - one after another. Se demands complete submission, and another person’s freedom is for it evidence of its own insufficient work. The pairing of Se and Ti is all the more inclined to formalize the powerlessness and lack of freedom of its subjects into an unshakable system. Censorship becomes the rule, and citizens’ access to independent sources of information not controlled by the government is restricted in every possible way already at the initial stages of formation of the dictatorship (Lenin began by closing all non-Bolshevik newspapers, while Erdoğan banned Twitter for his people, refusing to reverse this decision even after the constitutional court of his own country ruled it unlawful). According to socionic statistics, Se is inclined to use violence, deception, and intimidation to solve any arising problems. Therefore, such regimes can evolve only in one direction – toward tightening the screws, becoming increasingly and increasingly severe.

Fifth, Beta rule carries a very high probability of rampant corruption (in the broad sense, a consequence of high Se against a background of deficient Fi). Corruption flourishes even in pseudo-socialist Beta states with a completely destroyed market economy, such as Stalin’s USSR or modern North Korea. The point is that whatever a Beta regime may proclaim itself to be in its constitutional outward appearance, in its fundamental essence it is always close either to a feudal or to a slaveholding system. Unrepressed public control “from below” does not exist under Beta regimes (power in them descends only from the top downward), and Beta appointees in local positions regard their office as a legitimate feudal patrimony and a source of feeding sanctioned by quadral values. Corruption and the export of moral decay are also used as instruments of foreign-policy expansion toward neighboring countries - representatives of their elites are actively bribed (Peter I already brilliantly concluded the Great Northern War by massively bribing deputies of the Swedish parliament - unaccustomed to bribery, they even formed a queue).

Sixth, Beta rule is obsessed with the mandatory nature of universal popular pride in the grandeur and ostentation of its rulers (Se+Fe). Those “renegades” who, like Leo Tolstoy, regard the self-criticism of civil society that contributes to progress as patriotism, while laughing at “great-power pride” and “world primacy” against a background of masses of unresolved and irresolvable problems, are, as a rule, repressed by the regime so that they do not interfere (Ti+Se). The abundance of patriotically preoccupied psychopaths, undistinguished by knowledge or intelligence and suddenly surfacing en masse from some marginal depths of society, becomes a sign of the times under Beta regimes. That is, affairs under Beta regimes often proceed exactly in accordance with how this was compactly formulated in a Soviet-era rhyme: “We neither plow, nor sow, nor build; we take pride in the social system.” Such a regime knows no shame (Fi) about its own lies; instead, it inflames animalistic-marginal popular enthusiasm that is aggressive toward any critical view and free thought, but enthusiastic about the military-police repressive might of the state and its leaders (Fe+Se). Unfortunately, this is not to everyone’s liking, especially against the background of the inevitable onset of disenfranchisement and impoverishment of the broad masses - and this applies even to very many educated or simply intelligent Beta types (not only ethical types, but even very, very many ordinary LSIs and SLEs).

Seventh, power based in pure form on Beta Se, as a general rule, values neither freedom nor the fate or lives of people — and this applies first and foremost not to foreigners, but to its own subjects. The ideology of “unanimity” professed by such power prescribes that the only supreme value is the interests of the depersonalized state (in fact, read: the ostentation of its ruler and of the group of especially close hawkish security-force figures), while in comparison the interests of the people, their needs, and the very lives of subjects are insignificant (“the women will give birth to new ones”). Hence the other common extraverted-sensing sayings that begin to be used increasingly often in society: “The end justifies the means,” “When the forest is felled, chips fly,” etc. Hence also mass repression, commissioned court proceedings, entirely fabricated criminal cases - with setups and planted false evidence, directed against opponents, witnesses to government lies, or simply those from whom something can be taken; hence also indifference to the lives of one’s own soldiers on battlefields or in barracks (if this indifference can be concealed by secrecy and propaganda), the tightest police control over the words, interests, and movements of subjects up to overt interference in their private lives, etc.

Eighth, the sensory-Beta elite habitually, because of dominant force sensing, pulls all of society’s resources toward itself and, by virtue of structural logic against the background of violence prompted by Se, makes the values of its own quadra universally obligatory for all people without exception. In both cases, the interests of other quadras are crudely ignored (which, incidentally, does not occur under any other quadral rule except Beta rule). But more than three quarters of the population, if one examines the matter, do not in fact share sensory-Beta values at all, and this creates a problem for the authorities. It is solved through numerous deceptions, while, at least for the Beta regimes known to history in the world over the last two centuries, a regime of total secrecy becomes the cover for state cynicism. Violators of this regime are regarded as the principal enemies of the authorities, potentially threatening their stability, and Beta power does not stand on ceremony with its enemies, often tending toward their physical destruction. Therefore, one of the main pieces of practical wisdom for people of such an era becomes the rule: “The less you know, the longer you live” (a saying that, in its Russian-language version, originated in Stalin’s USSR).

Ninth, another consequence of the task of retaining power at any cost and contrary to the genuine interests of the majority is a deliberate government policy of making the population less intelligent – egocentrically oriented power needs easily suggestible subjects with short memories and the phenomenon of split consciousness, incapable of comparing facts. “I do not need clever people; I need loyal subjects,” Tsar Peter said. An intelligent society is unlikely to support for long a government ruling contrary to its interests. It is understandable that under extraverted-sensing regimes lacking Fi, Te, and Ne among their values, science too, with its perpetual striving for truth and enlightenment, is almost always marginalized. In Hitler’s Germany, Nazi appointees to the posts of heads of scientific institutions constantly conflicted with one another, using mutual denunciations to the Gestapo for this purpose. The development of science in Germany was also hindered by the fact that its most progressive fields were declared “Jewish inventions.” Under the wing of Nazi bigwigs and beneath the benign cover of secrecy, mystical pseudosciences flourished in Germany in the 1930s, siphoning off the state budget – later, in the Brezhnev-Andropov era, similar mystical pseudosciences, encouraged by the Soviet Beta military (also because of their weak Ne), would come to feed from the Soviet defense sector as well. In Mussolini-era Italy, major scientists emigrated one after another, following Fermi, although the Duce raised professors’ salaries to astronomical heights. In Stalin’s USSR there were none of these “Mussolinian” benefits, but all scientists were in the first echelon of candidates for imprisonment. Only those who worked directly for the military and police machines or labored on prolonging the lives of the leaders were supported and preserved. Thus, the Institute of Experimental Medicine, originally created for work on life-extension issues, arose thanks to Stalin’s resolution and at Voroshilov’s initiative, who was very, very afraid of death. The effectiveness even of the few studies supported by the state was, however, sharply reduced by official personnel policy, which valued not intelligence but ideological pigheadedness or, at minimum, the ability to lie, as well as by the general atmosphere of paranoia and lack of culture cultivated in the country. The best designers were also repressed in the Soviet defense sector. Entire scientific fields were repressed - for example, the development of Soviet rocket technology in the 1930s. New technology mainly borrowed stolen Western models. Even the genre of science fiction in literature, with the rarest exceptions, remained prohibited in the USSR until Khrushchev. And this was still nothing – later, in Beta Pol Pot Cambodia, educated urban intellectuals wearing glasses were simply killed en masse by blows of a pickaxe to the back of the head. The very frequent persecution of science and enlightenment under Beta regimes occurs by no means because of rulers’ stupidity – Pol Pot was a schoolteacher, and Stalin, all the more, was very well educated for a politician and had a fairly broad outlook. It is little known, but the leader of the peoples even wrote poetry himself, and good poetry at that, quite professional (considerably better than Andropov’s later verses). That is, the reason lies not in the leader’s intelligence and education but in the system of valued psychic functions, within which intellectual values and the values of progress are almost inevitably sacrificed to the interests of strengthening police autocracy, which dominate everything else. A negative attitude toward enlightenment in the group tendency is, unfortunately, especially characteristic of the LSI psychotype, irrespective of its own intelligence. There are undoubtedly exceptions, but experiment shows that, on average, representatives of this type are the champions in the socion in agreement with the following statement: “Sometimes I wish that other people were more stupid than I am and knew less than I do” (+0,64 standard deviation – a very substantial amount). In the functional profile of this statement, Se predictably leads (averaging over 500 respondents). Therefore, LSI rule is not infrequently the burial of progress and science, especially with an LSI of the sensory subtype. The USSR, created by Stalin according to his own Beta canons and remaining such even during the Khrushchev decade, nevertheless launched the first artificial satellite (the creation of ballistic missiles for delivering nuclear bombs to America was a priority in the militaristic state), but high-resolution photographic film for the Soviet spacecraft that first photographed the far side of the Moon nevertheless had to be secretly borrowed from American reconnaissance probes that had fallen on Soviet territory. When the entire world had already been using the corresponding achievements for decades, the USSR still had neither washing machines, nor refrigerators, nor tape recorders, nor ballpoint pens, nor normal children’s toys, nor toilet paper, nor good photographic and motion-picture materials and movie cameras of its own manufacture, nor high-quality and still less mass-produced automobiles, nor even moderately decent television and radio receivers, while telephone sets and loudspeakers for wired radio with a single broadcasting program, installed in apartments, were for decades produced in only one obsolete external design and model.

Finally, tenth, an extraverted-sensing Beta regime resting on clans of security-force personnel is always something that lasts for a very, very long time, and a country’s liberation from it practically never subsequently occurs peacefully. Before that, democracy may take pride in itself for decades and therefore experiment with universal popular expression of will, admitting even the most odious personalities to the contest for the highest office in the country (such as, for example, the neo-fascist candidate for president of the USA Donald Trump). In six cases out of seven, not a sociopath but popular sobriety wins the election. Yet a single case out of seven turns out to be enough — after just one victory by a person of the Mussolini or Donald Trump type, subsequent free elections and any other freedoms in the country may already cease to exist. Beta regimes usurp power and strengthen themselves for decades ahead or even for many generations (because of the Se+Ti linkage, the ruling power elite knows no task more important than preserving power and the continuity of its own Beta values). Subsequently, regimes that turn their citizens into slaves can exist quite stably and for a long time even as odious global economic outsiders, sustaining themselves solely through total internal propaganda (with police repression), an iron curtain at their borders, and outward-directed military blackmail. North Korea is a convincing example. In the end, they generally collapse only from external causes (most often because they set themselves against the entire world and unleash adventurist aggressive wars).

But one cannot fail to note those aspects of Beta regimes that at least Beta types themselves, and people with high Se in general, may sometimes sincerely regard as positive. These are the upbringing of the people in a spirit of unanimity and self-sacrifice in relation to the orders of the government and supreme commander-in-chief; great-imperial values; constant appeals to the conservative traditional values of bygone autocratic centuries (which, however, are usually contrasted with human rights); concentration on the goals of power dominance in the world (and sometimes their temporary achievement); and a deep, though specific, patriotism (flowing smoothly from the slogan “My country is always right” into the similar assertion: “The country’s leaders are always right and are not subject to criticism, while whoever criticizes them is not a patriot”). But even if one abstracts from the existence in society of many people with other values and interests that are trampled under regimes of this kind, and simply proceeds from the generally recognized interests of society as a whole (including progress as intensive rather than extensive development, increasing human intellectual potential, a sound economy and its competitiveness in world markets, functioning social mobility, a developed social sphere, convenience of life for citizens, etc.), then even in this case one has to recognize the negative role of most Beta extraverted-sensing regimes, their failure by all these criteria.

Many of the symptoms of extraverted-sensing Beta rule described above can be traced in the historical examples of the Lenin-Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini regimes (the latter two destroyed freedom and democracy, and then many people, after coming to power by entirely legal means), as well as in the contemporary regimes of North Korea, Cuba, or, for example, in the formation of a Beta regime in Turkey under Recep Erdoğan. None of what has been said, however, should in any way be understood as supposedly “bad human qualities” even of only a small part of Beta sensory types. Practically all of them are completely normal people in everyday life. It is simply that power corrupts some people and not others (just as does the “housing problem”). Are Beta sensory types to blame for the negative traits of Beta regimes? In any event, they are no more to blame than representatives of other quadras who elevate them to positions and offices in modern society that are most unsuitable for them, thereby converting their traits that are potentially positive for society (which can be used successfully in the army, in production, in sport, in design work, in medicine – there are many good surgeons among them, and in art! – there are many excellent film directors among them) into sharply negative properties. But even here there are exceptions – among Beta types there are rulers who respond in the very best way to the goals and tasks of modern society at a particular stage (SLE Winston Churchill is an example). Another example of a positive exception to the general negative tendency is, in the opinion of the majority of Russians surveyed by sociologists, the rule of V. V. Putin, who led Russia at a difficult time of decline in its global influence. The majority of Belarusians hold the same opinion regarding their president A. G. Lukashenko.

It must also be remembered that Se acquires despotic traits only under conditions of uncontrolled power. In those cases where strong, inviolable, effective public oversight of power exists in the state, the ruler’s Se can in some cases bring the country considerable benefits as well.

And what is the use of all this psychological knowledge? It is diverse. In particular, for politicians it also consists in not being excessively trusting toward countries in which uncontrolled Beta leaders are in power. For example, toward North Korea - with its extreme misanthropic regime, nuclear bombs, and missiles under construction; or toward Iran - with its enormous resource potential, desire for nuclear weapons, and Beta rule of the ayatollahs; and especially toward China - with its economic and military might, where since 2012 SLE Xi Jinping, a protégé of the Chinese security establishment, has been in power. The many years of friendship between Russia and Turkey were destroyed in a single day (of course, through the fault of LSI Erdoğan), while Kaiser Wilhelm II (SLE) was not stopped in 1914 even by close family ties with the Russian ruling house when unleashing the First World War, the bloodiest in human history. Nor did any economic ties or political agreements stop Adolf Hitler in 1938, 1939, and 1941 (EIE with sharply strengthened activating Se).

We have devoted much space to describing typical extraverted-sensing Beta regimes, but what is the situation in government with the peculiarities of Gamma extraverted sensing? Extraverted sensing is an egocentric function in Gamma as well, but in this quadra it does not, as a rule, lead to the emergence of despotic regimes. Let us recall the reasons for this peculiar Gamma political “vegetarianism,” which we discussed above. First, Gamma is formed by the Socials and Researchers clubs, which are distinguished by individualistic psychology. Moreover, whereas in “Alpha” individualism is restrained to some extent by Fe, which requires communication in and with a crowd, in Gamma it is especially high. This means that Gamma is not inclined to construct a power hierarchy or to form cohesive aggressive packs, as in “Beta.” Gamma types may be profiteers; they may display brusqueness and belligerence (like LIE Catherine II or like SEE Trotsky, Khrushchev, and former Georgian president Saakashvili), but the overwhelming majority of Gamma types are not inclined to establish censorship or impose unanimity on society; they regard such trends negatively. Incidentally, this is also why their rule is sometimes not durable – so to speak, traces of abuses become common knowledge, while the police are embarrassed to shoot at the opposition. Second, the role of valued Fi is very important in Gamma – thus, in comparison with SLE, even SEE is characterized by a secret conscientiousness that it carefully conceals from outsiders. It usually tells no one about its manifestations because it regards it as a defect (for most SEEs dream of resembling SLEs in their “toughness”). Third, in “Gamma” the two psychotypes closest to power in their interests and capabilities are SEE and LIE (unlike LSI in “Beta,” the introverted Gamma ethical type ESI more often keeps away from initiative-taking politics). But both psychotypes, SEE and LIE, are highly self-confident positivists, which distinguishes them from both SLE and LSI. And where these two character qualities are present, there is optimism and, in any case, an absence of vindictiveness.

If the most specific Gamma manifestations coupled with extraverted sensing are generalized, they are greed, a tendency toward profiteering, an inclination to measure everything in money (Se+Te), and love of fame (Se+Fi), which in politics often takes the form of populism. Profiteering may be far from conspicuous in everyone, but few Gamma politicians manage to avoid populism. And is that even necessary? Populism is bad for society only if it interferes with choosing the most effective pragmatic solutions. SEEs suffer from this problem more often (Yeltsin, Sarkozy), whereas LIEs are usually all right in this respect. A strong side of Gamma politicians is their orientation toward tomorrow (Te+Ni) – although this sometimes interferes with the interests of maintaining stability. Because Ni is valued, both Beta and Gamma constantly carry out some kinds of reforms (in Beta – constant counter-reforms), legislation is constantly changed (in Beta – legislation is constantly tightened), and in both cases this reduces the predictability of tomorrow’s rules, often hindering business and irritating ordinary citizens. At the same time, a problem of Gamma politicians (almost as with Beta politicians, although not in such an explicit form because of the presence of Fi) is the low level of current care for the population under their charge (because Si is not valued).
