Quantitative Socionics

Definition of Questimity

On the one hand, questimity can be defined through the concept of INDIVIDUALISM. However, caution is needed here: one must not confuse individualism of an egocentric kind, which assigns value only to what is connected with the individual THEMSELF (and with that individual alone), with sociopolitical individualism, which involves recognizing the value of EVERY individual as a person in society. In the case of Qi, these two kinds of individualism do indeed merge into one; however, Qe, for example, is indifferent to sociopolitical justice and promotes only its own SELF everywhere.

On the other hand, questimity is also closely connected with the concept of mental REACTIVITY, that is, the capacity to respond to any incoming stimuli, changing one’s behavior as a result. Such responses can be highly diverse - thus, they include both a readiness to drop everything instantly upon encountering a new positive stimulus (perceived as “a better good”) and rush toward it; and a tendency to flare up and “bristle” (as V.L. wrote earlier) at anything perceived as a negative stimulus, as a threat. (Nevertheless, negative stimuli specifically are somewhat more significant for questimity - probably simply because, within the system of socionics, inert questimity is associated with the trait of negativism rather than positivism.)

Here, too, by analogy with individualism, we can distinguish two different kinds of reactivity: when an incoming stimulus is perceived as a threat (or a benefit) only to the individual’s OWN homeostasis, and when it is seen as threatening (or of overriding value) to the entire social structure familiar to the individual - with all its rituals, taboos, structure of authorities, set of recognized discourses, etc. In the case of Qe, irritation arises in both of the situations described above; however, Qi, for example, is sensitive only to disruptions of personal homeostasis, yet is indifferent to, and even views positively, the destruction of social homeostasis.

Thus, questimity as a concept lies at the intersection of the concepts of individualism and mental reactivity (which often manifests itself as irritability, especially in combination with negativism). White questimity tends more toward the former in its manifestations, black questimity - toward the latter. However, as we can see from the reasoning above, they also have something in common, and this is EGOCENTRISM, equally inherent in both Qi and Qe.

Any manifestations of a questimic kind place the individual at the center of the world represented in their psyche and use the degree of benefit or harm received by that person as a consequence of various events as the foremost stimulus for activity (or for avoiding it).

Personal feelings or personal logic, personal possessions and their preservation or personal ideas and their realization - these are what concern a questim most of all, what their world revolves around. Depending on whether a person is an ethical or a logical type, a sensing or an intuitive type, one or another of the things listed above becomes more or less significant, while nevertheless remaining, on the whole, more significant than the feelings, logic, possessions, and ideas of other people.

In a number of cases, for example, against a strongly logical background, this can give rise to classical egocentrism - that is, a lack of interest in understanding another person’s opinion and, consequently, considerable difficulty understanding that other people very often act on entirely different motives.
However, against an ethical background, questimic egocentrism often transforms into the perception of particular inferences as the only correct ones solely on the basis of an individual “I like it that way,” accompanied by deep resentment at any criticism of one’s personal intellectual constructions - since such criticism is seen as an attack on the person themself.

Against a sensing background, questimity is egocentric in consumption. Such a person is characterized by aestheticism that finds fault with every minor detail in other people’s work and creative output; they perceive any deviations from the standards they recognize as mistakes, flaws, and deformities, and demand that these be eliminated before they begin consuming the product.

Finally, intuitive questimity is egocentric in the domain of ideas. Being engrossed in its own ideas and perceiving them as supremely important, it takes a permissive attitude toward the domestic disorder that arises around it (as a consequence of its sensing passivity); it often naively demands that others take care of it in everyday life and certainly becomes immeasurably irritated by other people’s sensing needs, perceiving them as a burden and arguing that it is unbecoming for a creator to spend their life cleaning up other people’s shit.

QUESTIMITY AND OTHER TRAITS

The combination of questimity with dynamics is responsible for a strong instinct for self-preservation, avoidance of dangers, and a striving for comfort.

The combination with statics - for nonconformism, that is, an inability to adapt to other people and social arrangements and to moderate one’s personal views in accordance with external demands.

The combination of questimity and rationality is associated with moral fault-finding and inflexibility, an inability to switch between different people, their problems, and their tasks.

The combination of questimity and irrationality is responsible for a focus on personal pleasures and the unconscious avoidance of any activity experienced as unpleasant (which often leads to procrastination).

Questimity in combination with introversion gives rise to well-developed personal boundaries, the safeguarding of one’s personal space, thoughts, and experiences against possible influence on outsiders (and often ultimately leads to a preference for solitude in order to conserve personal energy).

In combination with extraversion, questimity gives rise to an excessive drive for self-presentation (often taking on narcissistic features), and also leads to an inability to wait patiently and to heightened reactions of indignation at everything perceived as unpleasant and wrong.

Against a background of negativism, questimity rejects all authorities and seeks independence, whereas against a background of positivism - it strives to establish its own authority and seeks support and praise.

Finally, in combination with the process pole, questimity actively raises questions about the fairness of the world order toward the individual themself, whereas in combination with the result pole - it distances itself from other people’s complex problems in attempts to preserve itself and attain peace of mind.
