Marginal Notes. On Increasing Complexity and Detail.
The dichotomies of rightness-leftness (process-result), tactics-strategy, and logic-ethics may be linked to one another for a reason. There appears to be a rationale behind this linkage, and it is as follows.
Rightness is responsible for increasing the complexity of a situation (seeking a more global, even political context within it), whereas leftness is responsible for simplifying it (reducing it to what is happening directly here and now with specific people).
Tactics is responsible for delving into details (into imaginative play with everyday minutiae, behind which the vision of one’s life path as a whole is lost), whereas strategy is responsible for discarding all details that are superfluous on the path to a desired goal (one that promises positive reinforcement).
Logical types are divided into left strategists and right tacticians.
Left strategists - namely LII, SLE, LIE, and SLI - discard what is superfluous in order to simplify the system. This is the logic of survival under extreme conditions, linked to inert sensing, when it is necessary to understand what is happening and quickly make the correct decision on the basis of incomplete knowledge of the situation (for example, to take everything necessary during an evacuation or to assess which road would be better to take through potentially dangerous terrain).
Right tacticians - ILE, LSI, ILI, and LSE - increase the level of detail in order to increase the complexity of the system. And this is the logic of bureaucratic or technological systems, linked to inert intuition, when it is necessary to sift through a multitude of small details created by someone’s imagination in order to control certain complex processes.
Ethical types, in turn, are divided into left tacticians and right strategists.
Left tacticians - namely ESE, IEI, ESI, and IEE - increase the level of detail in order to simplify relationships. This can include concealing real contradictions between people behind ethical chatter, ritual “strokes,” and decorative details of everyday life created by someone’s imagination (inert intuition) - all in order to make living together within the narrow confines of the current day possible and free of conflict.
Right strategists - primarily EIE and SEE, and, less often, SEI and EII1 - by contrast, discard what is superfluous in order to increase the complexity of relationships, that is, to clarify them. And this means, above all, provocations intended to clarify someone’s nature, to “expose” someone by temporarily depriving them of their customary “strokes” and pleasures, or, conversely, by presenting certain vivid and tempting stimuli that appeal to their animal nature. That is, in one way or another, placing sensing in an inert position (through asceticism or stimulation of hedonistic desires), and then observing what will happen and how the subject will respond.
Footnotes
As a statistical tendency, SEI are more often inverted toward leftness, and EII toward tactics. In general, since these are weak traits, their association with specific types is highly conditional, and in practice the combination is individual for each person. The logical connection discovered is itself of greater interest. ↩
