What Personality Factors Lead to a Decrease in the Height of the Raw Type Profile
(and, accordingly, to a decrease in reliability indicators in the results of socionic questionnaires)
We present an excerpt from a study by V. L. Talanov on this subject.
The questionnaire items are listed below (grouped according to their association with personality factors), and each of these items is associated with a fairly large share of the variance in type-profile height (from 16% to 4% of the variance in the S indicator).
FACTORS THAT REDUCE PROFILE HEIGHT:
A) SCHIZOTYPAL MANIFESTATIONS OF PERSONALITY (WITH A PREDISPOSITION TO THOUGHT ECHO, VERBAL PSEUDOHALLUCINATIONS, INFLUX AND CONFUSION OF THOUGHTS)
- Sometimes the voices sounding in my head become uncontrollable and intrusive.
- My thoughts often begin to live as though they had a life of their own, independent of me and my will.
- At times I have a strange and not very pleasant feeling that my own thoughts are in fact not mine, but as though someone had put them into my head, as though someone were dictating them to me from outside.
- I have problems with the sense of my inner personal wholeness.
- I often become disoriented and get confused in my own thoughts.
B) SCHIZOID PERSONALITY STRUCTURE (WITH A PREDISPOSITION TO WITHDRAWAL «INTO ONESELF» AND SELF-ISOLATION OF ONE’S INTERESTS FROM SOCIETY)
- I often think about the scale of the Universe.
- Perhaps I sometimes devote too much time to “mental chewing gum”, too often weighing, thinking over, and evaluating things, reasoning around and around, instead of simply doing something and moving on.
- I am often deep in thought.
C) DEPRESSIVE STATES
- I often have sad states in which everything suddenly begins to seem hopeless.
- I often experience quiet melancholy and a feeling of oppressive heaviness in my soul.
- I am often troubled by my gloominess, anxiety, irritability, as well as my frequent “getting stuck” on certain thoughts or on some unpleasant state.
- At times I am inclined to suffer for a long time.
- I am very rarely completely satisfied with the quality of what I have done.
- I often experience some kind of inner fear for no apparent reason.
- I have a problem with desires and drives - I often feel a deficit of them.
- I am often in a sad mood.
- I have prolonged periods of bad, melancholic-depressive mood with indifferent apathy.
- I am often in a state of inactive depression.
- I often feel lonely.
- I often lack impulses to act - there is no anxiety or worry, but at the same time I do not want to move, and I am even too lazy to talk.
- I am probably capable of something brilliant, but I do not know why - I do not know at all why I live.
- Sometimes I experience a severe feeling of guilt for a long time, with self-reproach and pangs of conscience.
- I am a gloomy type who always sits in a corner and stares into eternity.
- I often have depressive states in which everything seems gloomy and hopeless.
- I very rarely outwardly show any joy.
- I remain ashamed and distressed for quite a long time when I find myself in an awkward situation.
D) SUCH INTROVERTED MANIFESTATIONS AS LACK OF INITIATIVE, DEPENDENCE, SENSITIVENESS
- Almost every day I think about the impression I make on others.
- Compared with others, I tend rather toward greater reticence and shyness.
- I behave with restraint and expend my strength and energy sparingly.
- I tire and become distracted quickly; I lack “inner energy”.
- I do not like coming to the forefront in large groups; I am usually uncomfortable taking the initiative.
- In relations with the opposite sex, I usually wait for others to take the initiative.
- I have a mild and patient character, so I give the impression of being a very accommodating person.
E) AN EXCESS OF Ni MANIFESTATIONS – FANTASY-BASED DREAMINESS DETACHED FROM REALITY
- I am more a person of dreams and reflection than of action.
- I am often in a pleasant trance of certain elaborate plot-based fantasies unfolding over time - as though I were mentally watching a movie with characters, or fragments of dreams while awake, or listening in my head to pieces of theatrical scenes improvised on the spot.
- It is easier for me to estimate how long I was on the way than how much distance I covered.
- I can easily evoke vivid emotional memories in myself.
- My fantasies are almost always much coarser, more vivid, and larger in scale than my real life.
- My favorite roles are observer of fleeting moments, wanderer along the river of events.
- I am characterized by an “inner gaze”, fantasy, and imagination that lead into fictional worlds that know no temporal or spatial boundaries.
- I easily identify the most probable and main version among future events.
- I am very slow and dreamy; it is not easy to stir me into action in reality.
- I am often in a state of detached contemplation.
- I like to reflect on all kinds of hidden meanings.
F) SELF-DOUBT, A TENDENCY TOWARD CONSTANT DOUBT
- I have often had doubts about who I am.
- After doing something, I doubt whether I acted correctly.
G) COGNITIVE AND MOTOR RIGIDITY (INERTIA), REDUCED INTELLIGENCE
- I find it difficult to switch quickly between thoughts.
- On Internet forums, I sometimes agree with the stronger side without particularly delving into the substance of the dispute.
- I am closer to the idea that history and the path are common to everyone, rather than each person having their own.
- I often become disoriented and get confused in my own thoughts.
- I sometimes find it difficult to switch quickly from one movement to another.
H) AN EXCESS OF Fi MENTALITY TO THE DETRIMENT OF LOGIC AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF INTELLECTUAL RIGIDITY
- I strongly dislike it when people are inconstant in love and friendships.
- A bad person will never convince me of anything, even that two times two equals four.
I) MASOCHISTIC TENDENCIES IN CHARACTER
- I often behave as though I were deliberately “asking for” other people’s aggression, additionally provoking it with my words.
- Sometimes I myself seek suffering and self-sacrifice.
- I have fantasies involving ideas of self-torment and self-destruction.
J) PARANOIA AGAINST A BACKGROUND OF SELF-DOUBT
- After posting a comment on social media, I often delete it a day or two later - just in case.
- In my affairs, I always strive to avoid any possible future risk.
K) Ti WEAKNESS
- I would like a career as a singer-guitarist, performing mini-concerts for a small amount of money in the apartments of friends and admirers.
- In relations with people I know how to be flexible, that is, where necessary - I know how to play along, where necessary - I know how to remain silent.
L) INCREASED EMOTIONAL-AUTONOMIC REACTIVITY
- During bursts of sudden joy, it has happened that my bladder suddenly relaxed and failed to hold urine.
- I have cardiac pulse arrhythmias in which my heart keeps changing its rate of beating.
M) DISHONESTY
- More often I try not to raise someone else’s enthusiasm but, on the contrary, to “bring it down” or even ridicule it.
- Only suckers always pay their bills in full.
- It is stupid to admit my guilt - when I am at fault, I can almost always turn the conversation toward the guilt of those around me.
- There are plenty of crooks and deceivers around me.
- There are no people around me from whom I would prefer to receive information rather than money.
----------------------------—
FACTORS THAT INCREASE THE RELIABILITY OF ANSWERS AND THE HEIGHT OF THE TYPE PROFILE ACCORDING TO QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS:
N) LOW SENSITIVENESS AND INDEPENDENCE FROM OTHERS’ OPINIONS
- I do not care at all what people think of me.
- I usually do not keep in mind for long, and easily drive out of it, those thoughts and conjectures that are inconvenient and unpleasant.
- I easily throw out of my head everything that has passed and gone by.
O) SUFFICIENT DEVELOPMENT OF THE SENSING SPHERE, INDICATING AT LEAST THE ABSENCE OF PSYCHOPATHOLOGY (however, overall the Sensing pole provides no advantage in the height of the raw type profile)
- I am surprised by people who spend a great deal of time on what they call “the play of imagination”.
- I like work involving an intensive load on motor coordination.
- I can drive a car well.
- I dream about other countries more often than about future times.
P) SOCIAL ACTIVITY AND RESPONSIBILITY, INITIATIVE, SELF-CONFIDENCE, HIGH SELF-ESTEEM
- I am socially and politically active, work diligently, and constantly expand the spheres of my influence “in breadth”.
- Every minute of my life is filled with seething energy of life and happiness.
- In my behavioral style, I am energetic, responsible, and well organized.
- I can do practically everything and know how to do everything.
- I am proud that I never do anything useless.
- I often take the initiative.
- I am capable of emotional experience and often feel a pleasantly excited sense of reward for my efforts, a feeling of joyful success.
- I practically always feel self-confident.
- My usual state is a feeling of active elation with a sense of complete control over the situation and security.
- I often experience a feeling of inner pride and success.
- I can easily flare up when I encounter someone’s meanness and injustice toward the simple-hearted and the weak.
- I strive always to be visible, setting the emotional tone in a group of people.
Q) DEVELOPMENT OF LOGIC, PREDOMINANCE OF THE LOGICAL POLE
- I am somewhat emotionally “short-sighted” and usually distinguish in others only very vivid and strong experiences.
- I do not always understand exactly when people become upset and offended - when they are sobbing their eyes out - that is understandable.
- Knowledge and facts usually occupy me much more than beauty and feelings.
- I possess well-organized scientific thinking.
- I know how to plan and clearly organize the overall work process.
R) NEED AND READINESS TO CARE FOR CLOSE PEOPLE (AN EXCESS OF BOTH ONE’S OWN STRENGTH AND ELEVATED MOOD TOGETHER WITH SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY)
- I like having guests and very much like treating them to food.
- I have a strong need to care for and protect close people (perhaps it is more developed in me than in others).
S) SOCIONICS COMPETENCE
- I know how the so-called “volitional sensing” differs from “sensing of sensations”, and “black” logic from “white” logic.
---------------------------------------—
A direct analysis of the relationship between the height of the raw type profile and the substantive side of socionic profiles (see figure) shows that the height (contrast) of the raw type profile S, and together with it the reliability and interrelatedness of the respondent’s answers, is higher, the higher the respondent’s indicators of Statics, Logic, Ascending, Emotivism, and Aristocracy are. Among the functions, the association with Ti is positive, while those with Fi and Si are negative. Exactly the same correlations with socionic indicators are shown by the second reliability criterion, the correlation between the results of the two halves of the test.
The highest average S indicators are demonstrated by three Ti-logicians – LSI, SLE, and LII, while the lowest are demonstrated by the socionic types SEI and ESI.
The following question may arise. In the lists of questionnaire items above that are associated with a decrease in the height of the type profile S, there were quite a few questions whose own type profiles are characterized by high Ni values. Nevertheless, the figure shows that Ni by itself does not negatively affect profile height, and its effect on S even tends to be positive. How can this be? The matter lies in a U-shaped relationship. With a moderate increase in Ni, it positively affects the height of the type profile, and this effect predominates in the population as a whole. But with a further increase in Ni and transition into the zone of personal schizothymia, its effect on S becomes sharply negative, because from that point onward Ni begins to correlate with the breakdown of social ties and with the disorganization of logical thinking.
TYPE GROUPS - Deviations of the raw type-profile height indicator S from its population mean level (in units of the population standard deviation)
| ILE | LII | SEI | ESE | SLE | LSI | IEI | EIE | SEE | ESI | ILI | LIE | IEE | EII | SLI | LSE |

Ivan Romanov
It is strange that I find in myself very many traits from the first group (the one reducing profile sigma) and almost nothing from the second. Yet I am quite a typical LII, and when taking tests my sigma is always above average. The question about Ni arose immediately - thank you for resolving it right away. But I want to ask: on the basis of what statistics was the profile shown in the image calculated? I have SOLTI-192 and BOLTI-434 statistics on hand, and in both cases the lowest-ranked types by the height of raw-profile S are ESE and LIE (for that reason I had even previously assumed that strong De impairs the capacity for self-knowledge, whereas strong Di, on the contrary, improves it, and therefore psychological space in De regions turns out to be excessively sparse, while in Di regions it is dense). SEI and ESI also have reduced S there, but not as strongly. Yet in these statistics we see that LIE has S even above average. I should note that I simply calculated the arithmetic mean of the S values for all representatives of each type (the leading type in the profile according to the questionnaire diagnosis). I assume this is a crude estimate of the quantity. What does Viktor Lvovich use in this case?
And one more major request: I would like to see separately the type profile of mean S for people with a high level of knowledge of socionics (who indicated it in the questionnaire at levels 3/4 and 4/4) and for beginners (strictly 1/4). This will be of more interest to Mark Arimanov and other skeptics (probably), although I would not mind seeing it either:) Thank you!
Talanov Questionnaires - Personality Type Test
Author
Ivan, the profile shown was obtained from the latest 11 questionnaires (since August 2018). This is about 6 thousand respondents. The processing method is also important; depending on it, somewhat different profiles are obtained for S (a little later today, toward evening, I will provide the versions, after I get through my other tasks). This one was obtained as follows:
- Initially, for respondents, correlations with diagnostic coefficients are used to determine not their type profile, but an orthogonal trait profile; the type profiles are then calculated from it.
- In this case, the S profile indicators are not the mean accumulated deviations in groups of respondents formed according to their leading types (as usual), but the correlations of the resulting profiles of the respondents with S (before this, the sample is mathematically balanced so that all types are equally represented in it). That is, the second and third peaks of respondents’ profiles under this calculation also contribute to the final S profile.
